To the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav David Nathan (see note 1),

I greet you and bless you.

I have learned of your state of health and, at an auspicious moment, I will mention your name near the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us, the leader of Israel. Indeed, you had the merit to see him and to receive his teaching, dispensed with benevolence. Now, the words of the righteous are living and immutable. They exercise their effect, materially and spiritually.

May Hashem therefore grant that you widen the channel enabling you to receive these blessings of the Tzaddik*, foundation of the world. In fact, the foundation is the attribute of Yosef the Tzaddik. You should also consult the Likkutei Torah* of the Arizal*, in Parshas Vayera, and the Etz Chaim*, Partzufei Z'uN*, chapter 3, according to which "Yitzchak" is an anagram of "Ketz Chai" (see note 2). Indeed, the five elements of severity, which are called "Yitzchak," belong to the foundation called "Chai." You should consult this text.

I mean to say that you must intensify your study of the teaching of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, observe what he instituted — in particular the three well-known studies concerning the Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya* — and influence your entire surroundings to do the same.

And you know the saying of our masters, according to which "it is certain that an effort is never in vain."

With my blessing for good news of all this, in good health and with breadth of spirit,

The connection that can be made between the tzitzis* and the attribute of the foundation is specified by tractate Menachos 44a.
