Igrot Kodesh · Letter 4544 — Health
Volume 13 · Letter 275 · To: distingué ‘Hassid qui craint D.ieu

To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs,
Rav Naftali (see note 1) HaKohen,
I greet you and bless you.
I am responding to your letter from the luminous day of the celebration of the liberation (see note 2) of the 13th of Tammuz. I read with pleasure that you intend to engage more intensely and more strongly in your sacred mission — for yourself, your students, and your surroundings in general.
May Hashem grant that you influence your students so that they in turn become spiritual guides, transmitting the same message. In accordance with a saying of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, a person attains fullness with the birth of his grandchild. Now, the same is true in the spiritual realm — when a student in turn trains a student, when a disciple has a disciple.
An allusion to this is also found in the explanation of our Sages regarding the merit of one whose disciple has a disciple, in the Tosefta*, at the end of tractate Eduyos, according to what the Aruch* states in the entry "Abaye," and in the letter of Rav Sherira Gaon*, at the same reference.
I hope that by the time you receive this letter, your state of health will have improved, and you will give good news of that as well.
You mention your brother, who will have his Bar Mitzvah* at the end of this year and is drawing closer to the path of Chabad. You ask me whether he should change the customs he currently observes to adopt those of Chabad. His parents have given their agreement, on this point and on the conduct he will adopt, in conformity with the response (see note 3).
In my opinion, he should begin to do so on the day when he becomes obligated to practice the mitzvos*, or, to prepare for this, a little before. You should consult the responsa of the later authorities (see note 4) according to which one has the right to change from the Ashkenazi rite to the Sefardi rite, but not the reverse. The same therefore applies to the transition from the Sefardi rite to the Nusach Ari* and to that of the Alter Rebbe*, but not the reverse.
Moreover, as you know, the Alter Rebbe — author of the Tanya* and decisor of the hidden dimension of Torah, author of the Shulchan Aruch* and decisor of the revealed dimension of Torah — established his practices and customs in cities and in milieus that previously had other customs. This is self-evident.
You conclude your letter by discussing the manner in which one turns during Birchas Kohanim* (see note 5). One must verify what the practice of the Chassidim is in the Holy Land on this matter. They undoubtedly possess a tradition from the first Chabad Chassidim who came to Eretz Yisroel in the era of the Mitteler Rebbe*.
You surely made use of the days of the celebration of the liberation (see note 6) in the most active way. To the extent possible, you will endeavor to maintain this motivation during the following days. May Hashem grant you success.
With my blessing,
For the Rebbe Shlita*,
the secretary,
E. Kwint
