To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, a man of many accomplishments and good character, Rav Yitzchak,

Greetings and blessings,

I received with pleasure your letter from Erev Shabbos*, relating the visit of the emissaries (sent to Eretz Yisroel* following the Kfar Chabad* attack; see letter 4546), may Hashem grant them long life, to your city. May Hashem grant that the words of encouragement spoken at this celebration take effect in a concrete manner during the coming days, for "the act, and not the theory, is essential."

We have noted at various farbrengens* that the expressions of our Sages are particularly precise. This is what Chassidus* teaches, departing from the view of thinkers and great scholars of Israel (who hold that one should retain the general idea without analyzing every word). You should also consult the introduction to the Moreh Nevuchim* (Guide of the Perplexed, by the Rambam*) on this subject.

In this case, our Sages emphasize that "idle words" (see letters 3909, 3958, and 4088) are neither forbidden nor repugnant. More subtly, one can describe in this way words of encouragement intended to change concrete action, but which do not achieve their purpose. You must understand what I mean. And this will help us understand the meaning of the expression: "Woe to one who speaks before ears that do not listen." You should also consult the Rambam's commentary on the Mishnah*, Tractate Avos, end of chapter 1, and Tractate Berachos 6b, which states: "When someone fears Hashem, his words are heard."

I was pleased by the description of the mikveh* in your letter. Moreover, the Tashbetz*, cited by various texts, explains that in everything concerning a mikveh, one must endeavor to follow as many opinions as possible.

May Hashem grant that Hashem, the Mikveh of Israel (Yirmiyahu 17:13), before Whom the children of Israel purify themselves — and these words about spiritual purity, in the most literal sense — bring about the purification of the daughters of Israel, but also of the sons of Israel, as stated in the Teshuvos Min HaShamayim* (Responsa from Heaven), chapter 5. The Rambam states, indeed, that ritual immersion for the purpose of purification was never abolished (even though the laws of impurity no longer apply at present), especially in preparation for prayer, which everyone agrees is more readily answered through immersion, as the Rif* emphasizes regarding the students of Rabbi Yehudah, in chapter 3 of Tractate Berachos, in the name of Rav Hai Gaon*. All of this is also explained by the Likkutei Torah* of the Alter Rebbe*, Parshas Tavo, page 43b.

It is in this way that one will hasten the true and complete Redemption, as stated by the Tossafos Yom Tov* at the end of Tractate Yoma and the Rambam at the end of the Laws of the Mikveh. And, as we have noted, the words of the Sages are precise. Thus, these days (preceding the 9th of Av, commemorating the destruction of the Beis HaMikdash*) will be transformed into joy and gladness.

With my respects and blessing,

P.S.: Your letter was opened by the postal inspector in England.
