To the young man Menachem Ben Tzion,
Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your two letters. At a propitious moment, I will mention all those you cite at the holy resting place (the Ohel*) of my father-in-law, the Rebbe (the Frierdiker Rebbe*), whose merit protects us. May Hashem grant that you announce good news to me of each of them.
You mention your activities within Chabad Youth. No doubt you will not be content with what has already been done. In general, no one should be satisfied with what he has already accomplished. The need of the moment is, indeed, action on a broader scale. And since this is necessary, it is clear that the strength required to achieve it is granted. Everything depends on those who act concretely.
May Hashem grant that you announce good news to me, particularly of what has just been discussed.
You inform me of your birthday. On this occasion, you have surely adopted the customs recently introduced by the Chassidim* (see letter 4339). May Hashem grant you a year of success in the study of the Torah*, the practice of the mitzvos* in the best possible manner — which, of course, includes fervent prayer.
It is clear that the spreading of the wellsprings* (of Chassidus*) is "a great principle of the Torah," just as Rabbi Akiva teaches that "'You shall love your fellow as yourself' is a great principle of the Torah."
With my blessing,
On behalf of the Rebbe Shlita,
The secretary,
E. Kwint,
You inform me of the objections raised against Chabad Youth. Stop debating them, for some of those who advance them would have raised an accusation in any case, and the others do not perceive the fundamental difference that exists between the approach of closeness adopted by Chabad and that which consists of distancing Jews who, for the time being, do not practice the mitzvos.
Chabad puts into practice the teaching of our Sages on this subject, cited by the Alter Rebbe* in chapter 32 of the Tanya*: "Love the creatures (offering the entirety of the Torah even to those whose only merit is having been created by Hashem) and bring them close to the Torah." Their approach, by contrast, goes in the opposite direction — it consists of bringing the Torah to the Jews (by means of compromises).
One who makes no distinction between these two opposing conceptions (presenting a complete Torah versus relying on concessions) — does he have a say in the matter? Those who criticize Chabad on this subject do not pay attention to the first part of the instruction of our Sages, previously cited. And whoever understands the importance of separating the wheat from the chaff will accept all these criticisms calmly. You should consult carefully, on this point, Tractate Bava Metzia* 85a.
I duly received the index, and I thank you for it.
To complete the study of Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya* (if, one day, it could not take place and must be made up the next day): it is clear that one begins with the passage from the day before, for it is also necessary to preserve the order — one does not study the second chapter before the first.
You also ask me why these studies of Chumash, Tehillim, and Tanya are not, from the outset, postponed until after Tisha B'Av* (given the prohibition of studying Torah on that day; in practice, these three studies are maintained in the afternoon of Tisha B'Av). Indeed, they are compared to the sacrifices, for which "the night follows the day" (one continues to burn during the night sacrifices that could not be completed during the day). Obviously, one completes these studies during the following night only in a case of force majeure, when there is no other possibility, and it is in this context that the comparison with sacrifices was made. A priori, however, this should not be so, for the Maariv* prayer (introducing the following day) contradicts these studies.
In many cases, the make-up is possible only if there is no alternative. In other words, as provided by the Halachah*, it does not fully recover what was missed and has only partial value. Nevertheless, this is not always the case.
One should also recall the assertion of the writings of the Arizal*, according to which one does not study the Oral Torah* during the night. Likewise, one endeavors not to recite Tehillim during the night, until its midpoint (one does so only during the second half of the night).
