I greet you and bless you.

You ask me to release you from your duties. I have already refused such requests from many Chassidim*. I will express, once and for all, my opinion, and you will then do as you see fit. Here it is:

The duties of the Chassidim in the Holy Land, at Kfar Chabad* and in the Chabad* institutions, are the channel and the receptacles enabling them to receive the blessings of our holy master, whose merit protects us — not only material blessings, but also spiritual ones, in the most literal sense — for them and for the members of their families. And the same applies to residing at Kfar Chabad.

Our Sages* say that one may confer a merit upon one's fellow even in his absence. On the other hand, one cannot do so against his will. It is therefore possible that certain Chassidim seek another channel, other receptacles, and that they succeed in their endeavor.

Naturally, I find no justification, no logic in such an attitude, in such a search. But you know the saying (see note 1), cited by Chassidus*, that "one cannot graft a head" (see note 2), and furthermore, "they do not have the same opinion" (see note 3). This is indeed the case regarding you and your holy mission.

You tell me that some are not satisfied with your conduct. In all problems arising between people, both parties bear responsibility, though not in the same proportion (see note 4). Yet the share, even the slightest, of responsibility must be rectified. When there will no longer be grounds for complaint, when the complaint becomes inconceivable, it will immediately disappear.

With my blessing that you make a decision based on your good and not on your will.

Notes:

(1) See letter no. 3744.

(2) One cannot implant understanding in one who lacks it.

(3) One cannot achieve unanimity.

(4) One bears a greater share of responsibility than the other.
