I greet you and bless you.

I respond to your letter of Rosh Chodesh* Menachem Av. You mention your business affairs and tell me that merchandise was purchased from you and that payment has been difficult to obtain. You do not know what will come of it.

At a propitious moment, I will mention your name at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, so that you earn your livelihood in a dignified and tranquil manner. May Hashem grant that, to the fullest extent possible, you put into practice the well-known teaching of the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and the Shulchan Aruch*, that "the Holy One, blessed be He, gives Jews material goods so that they make of them spirituality."

This means that one must use what one earns for the Torah* and its mitzvos*, that one must nourish oneself and the members of one's family in accordance with the teachings of the Shulchan Aruch, so as to be part of Holiness, as it is stated: "In all your ways, know Him." The Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim*, chapter 231, explains all of this at length.

It would also be good for you to set aside a tithe of your earnings for tzedakah*, and it has already been said regarding this: "Please, test Me in this matter."

You surely know about the three daily studies that apply to everyone, instituted by my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us. These are: Tehillim*, according to their monthly division, every day after the morning prayer; the Chumash* with the commentary of Rashi*, from the sidrah* of the week — on Sunday from the beginning of the parashah* to Sheini*, on Monday from Sheini to Shlishi*, and so on; and the daily study of the Tanya*, according to its annual division. You will adopt them at least from now on.

במענה על מכתבו מר"ח מנ"א, בו כותב אודות העסק שקנו אצלו סחורה ועתה קישוים בהנוגע לתשלומין, וספק אם יבוא הדבר לפועל וכו'.

בעת רצון יזכירוהו על הציון הק' של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע לפרנסה בכשרות ובמנוחה, ויהי רצון שככל התלוי בו יקים ההודעה המפורסמת של רבנו הזקן בעל התניא והשו"ע, אז הקב"ה גיט אידן גשמיות און זיי מאכען פון גשמיות רוחניות, פירושו, שמשתמשים בהפרנסה לעניני תורה ומצותי' והחלק של פרנסת עצמו ובני ביתו ג"כ על פי הוראת השו"ע שאז גם זה קדושה היא, וכמ"ש בכל דרכיך דעהו, וכמבואר בארוכה בשו"ע אורח חיים סי' רל"א, ומהנכון הי' שינהג בהפרשת מעשר מהריוח לצדקה וכבר נאמר על זה, ובחנוני נא בזאת וגו'...

בטח יודע משלשת השיעורים השוים לכל נפש מתקנת כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר

זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע והם: א) אמירת שיעור תהלים - כפי שנחלק התהלים לימי החדש - בכל יום אחר תפלת הבקר, ב) לימוד פרשה חומש עם פירוש רש"י מהסדרה של השבוע (ביום א' מהתחלת הסדרה עד פרשת שני, ביום שני מפרשת שני עד שלישי וכו'), ג) לימוד שיעור תניא בכל יום - כפי שנחלק התניא לימות השנה - ועכ"פ ישמור אותם מכאן ולהבא.
