To the national committee of the teachers' association of Agudas Yisroel* in our Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt by our righteous Moshiach*, speedily in our days, may Hashem grant you long life,
I greet you abundantly and bless you.
I respond to your invitation and will cite here, briefly, several points that should have been developed, but it is difficult to do so in the context of a letter.
It is clear that these words are spoken and addressed, through your intermediary, to all the teachers and all the educators.
A teacher and an educator must always bear in mind that the youth do not believe in compromises (see note 1), do not accept half-truths — if indeed such things exist. This is the reason why uncompromising education enjoys great success, in contrast to half, third, or quarter compromises, particularly with regard to the Torah* and its mitzvos*.
Some make the mistake of thinking that uncompromising education will frighten the young, that it will be too radical. The opposite is true. Any compromise on values arouses in the heart of the student a lack of trust, not only toward the educator, but also toward the ideas he represents.
Another point is equally essential. Compromise is a renunciation, a deviation from the straight path. Now, to what can one compare the slightest deviation from the path of absolute truth? To a notch made in a seed that is planted in the ground. Even if its size is minuscule, in time it will be the origin of an immense deformation in the tree that will subsequently grow. And it is difficult to imagine from the outset what this deformation will be. You must understand what this means.
On the other hand, one must take into account that Jews are "believers, children of believers." According to the saying (see note 2) of the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and the Shulchan Aruch*: "A Jew neither wants to nor can separate himself from the Divinity*."
In practical life, some adopt conduct that does not conform to what has been said. Moreover, they choose to go against the Torah of truth and its mitzvos. Whoever observes all this will realize that the explanation for such a situation is as follows.
A human being is made of flesh and blood. He possesses two souls — a holy soul* and an animal soul*. He does not always overcome the test. If he stumbles in the observance of the Torah and the mitzvos and does the contrary of what should be, he will have the courage to face the truth, to admit to himself that he has succumbed, that he has transgressed the Will of Hashem as well as his own true will, according to his conscience. It is said that "he who confesses his fault and abandons it will be shown mercy." He will therefore return to the straight path and be healed.
Conversely, one who lacks this courage, even toward his own person, will seek his own merit, will try to justify his bad conduct. Moreover, our Sages* say that one transgression leads to another. He will therefore feel a profound need to justify his attitude — to himself and to others — to defend his honor, which he is losing, in his own eyes, due to his weakness.
It is said that "love covers all faults." This is particularly true of love of one's own self. And the corruption of self-love makes one blind. It directs the mind and enables one to discover a "logical" explanation, or even a worldview encompassing all of creation, to explain the conduct one has adopted. In this way, one silences the remorse one may feel, by "demonstrating" that such an attitude is not a failure and a fall, but on the contrary, an ascent — that it is not a fault, but on the contrary, a mitzvah*.
Such conceptions have, of course, given rise to the educational systems that result from them and that advocate the observance of only half, urging compromise for the other half.
The common thread of all these conceptions is the following: the deviation from the straight path, the fall and the darkness, are presented as an elevation and a light.
Consequently, uncompromising education resolutely rejects the conception that "the times have changed," the assertion that the Torah and the mitzvos must be adapted accordingly.
This vision of education does not consist merely of adding a few more hours of study of our Torah, of multiplying the number of mitzvos, laws, and customs in the educational program and in the life of the student.
For all of that remains counted, limited. One can then measure the effort that should be invested.
In fact, uncompromising education is, above all, a means of placing the student before the truth — of telling him that darkness is dark, that light is bright, that the Torah is one, whole, from the time it was given until the present hour and for all eternity. In its entirety, it is a Torah of truth and also a Torah of life, in the most literal sense, in our world.
May Hashem grant that your gathering inspire in you increased ardor and enthusiasm in your work, which is a holy mission — that of educating and teaching — in order to bring to the sons and daughters of Yisroel the Words of the Living Elokim*, a Word that is whole and retains all its purity, without introducing the actions of men and their stratagems.
In this way, you will succeed in winning over the youth, in educating them and leading them on the way of Hashem, that of the Torah and the mitzvos. And, "the smallest shall become a thousand, the youngest shall constitute a mighty nation."
In your days and in ours, these days (see note 3) shall be transformed into joy and gladness. "One shall no longer teach his neighbor, for all shall know Me, from the least to the greatest."
With my respects and my blessing of success,
M. Schneerson
