Greetings and blessings*,
I am responding to your letter, which you began writing on 21 Elul*. In the meantime, you have surely received mine, which wished you a good year. May Hashem grant that the blessings that Jews wish one another be fully realized.
You mention the reaction to the organization of the young women (see note 1). You know the word of the Sage (see note 2), cited by my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, in his holy talks, that one can remedy all hatred except that which emanates from jealousy. Without being aware of it, she has therefore uttered a prophecy. I mean that she has revealed the deep reason for her reaction by saying, as you report in your letter: "Chabad* is working to develop strongly. Consequently..." (see note 3).
May Hashem grant that these individuals regret their actions while there is still time — that is, as long as they have not caused their students to acquire a negative conception of the Baal Shem Tov* and the students of his students, of the Alter Rebbe* and the students of his students, whose teaching is the Torah* of the living Elokim*.
It is quite obvious that this must not prevent you, Heaven forbid, from spreading the wellsprings of the Baal Shem Tov* until they reach the outside. It is surely possible to achieve such a result without engaging in struggles, for there is no time to devote to that, and such an approach is useless, since, in the end, the truth will prevail. It is only regrettable that these individuals create obstacles.
One must feel great pity for those who are in error, who do not see the beneficent truth, who not only derive no benefit from it themselves but, moreover, prevent a Jew from strengthening himself on the path of Torah* and mitzvos* through "the soul of the Torah*," in the expression of the holy Zohar* — that is, its inner dimension.
This pity is all the greater because those individuals presently consider themselves wholesome and complete, while they do not introduce into their lives everything that pertains to the inner teaching of the Torah*. And when Divine Providence makes these teachings known to them from various perspectives and through various aspects, they express their opposition by several means. May Hashem have mercy on them.
You know what the students of Rabbenu Yonah* write, which is also mentioned in the Shulchan Aruch* of the Alter Rebbe*, chapter 603. One who rejoices in his heart, telling himself that he has not committed a sin (see note 4), must attain a very great teshuvah*. He will offer, for this, a sacrifice that will cost him dearly. You should consult this text.
You mention your material situation. It has already been said, regarding everyone, that "salvation is obtained through many counselors." It would therefore be good to consult with the friends you mention in your letter. You will establish a program of the type you describe, in order to repay the debts you have currently incurred and, above all, to organize your expenses in the future so that they correspond to your income.
Little by little, you will repay the debts that have accumulated. You will classify them by categories — the most urgent and those that you can repay subsequently. When you have established such a program, I have good hope that you will be able to make efforts and seek the means to put it into practice, at least for its largest part.
I send you my blessing for success in your sacred mission. You will multiply the light among Jews and, through this, in the entire world, as the Tanya* explains in chapter 37, through your action for Jewish education based on sacred values.
