Greetings and blessings*,
In your letter, you describe your state of mind. You know that there exist several elements that are external to a person, others that exist in a certain way within the person, and still others that are limited to a thought that one may have about them.
When one thinks, the actual existence of the element in question does not matter. But in reality, this is not truly the case, for a person permanently possesses a force that enables him to identify his feelings, their sincerity, their intensity. The consequences of this examination exert their effect on the person, even when this force of identification is hidden, or, in common parlance, "subconscious" (see note 1). Indeed, even when concealed, this force always exists.
It is clear that the thoughts to which you allude belong to the third category. It is therefore easier to make them disappear. Moreover, very often, this disappearance is natural, and it suffices, to achieve it, to stop thinking about them — which is possible either for an external reason or because the person decides that it should be so.
You are surely aware of what has just been said. However, words expressed in written form by other people are sometimes much clearer. I hope this will indeed be the case here. I am enclosing a copy of my letter addressed to all (see note 2) on the occasion of this Rosh Hashanah*. You will find therein my views on various points that you raise in your letter, by allusion or clearly, and which are also the source of the thoughts you describe.
To use the expression of the Sages*, there is a decisive action that constitutes the strongest proof (see note 3). There are hundreds, thousands of people who, some time ago, had the state of mind you describe and who have completely rid themselves of it, without the slightest trace remaining. One can deduce from this what will be the case for those who still retain traces of this state of mind. However, common practice is that, quite naturally, one does not publicly report all of this, while the widest publicity is given to what is entirely marginal, or even less than that, but has an exceptional character (see note 4).
What has just been said would be useful if an analysis or explanation were necessary regarding all of this. Yet, by reflecting, even briefly, on the fact that each of us must carry out the mission entrusted to him in the world — that of multiplying light by strengthening and spreading a way of life conforming to the teachings of our Torah*, the Torah* of life, spreading it in the portion of the world entrusted to him and, all the more so, in his immediate surroundings — one will understand that there is no time remaining for thoughts like those described in your letter.
To be sure, initially it is not easy to exchange a thought about one's own self for one concerning the action one must carry out in the world of the Holy One, blessed be He. But, little by little, this becomes easier and easier, especially when one does it with joy. And the basis of this joy is what the Rambam* says at the end of his Laws of the Lulav* (see note 5).
The request for a blessing in your letter will be read, at a propitious moment, at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us.
Of course, you may continue in the future to write to me about personal questions, and the Alter Rebbe* gave the assurance that this in no way contradicts communal activities. The world and what it contains form one great entity, so that a person is, by himself, an entire world, including in domains that he considers material.
You know the following saying of Chassidus* (see note 6): "The material needs of the other are my spirituality." Moreover, the materiality of a Jew is also sacred. Indeed, Yisroel* is "one nation on the earth" — finding and revealing the Unity in material domains.
I send you my blessing for a joyous festival. This implies, according to the Midrash* and the Yalkut Shimoni*, a triple joy. You will give me good news of all this.
