Greetings and blessings*,
I am responding to your letter of 13 Tishrei*, in which you refer to the question that was posed to me in the name of such-and-such a person, and to the answer I gave him. You detail all of this and explain to me that his behavior, based on this answer, could cause a setback to the Yeshivah* and, Heaven forbid, cause harm in the class where this person carries out his sacred mission (see note 1).
It is quite evident that the answer to be given to such questions conforms to the Tosefta*, at the end of the second chapter of tractate Demai*, regarding a similar case (see note 2). In other words, my opinion and my answer are to be understood only if the details mentioned in the letter are accurate.
In any case, everything you say in your letter does not change my opinion, and you will please excuse me for this. May Hashem help you to strengthen the education of the children of Israel in sacred values, to increase it and to develop it. At all times and in every place, education has been one of the pillars upon which the House of Israel rests. How much more so is this the case in our generation, in "the land toward which the eyes of Hashem are always turned" — the palace of the King, King of kings, the Holy One, blessed be He (see note 3).
On this occasion, I would like to know whether the laws necessary for daily life are being studied. In previous generations, such study was not included in the program of a Yeshivah*, because the students saw how things were practiced in their homes, through the education they received from their parents. This is no longer the case today, due to our many transgressions. Everything concerning Judaism, including the most basic ideas, must therefore be taught to the students in the Yeshivah*.
Ultimately, this is indeed the essential matter, as it is said: "To fear Hashem and keep His mitzvos* is indeed the whole purpose of man." The same applies to the study that inspires in the students the fear and love of Hashem — that of Chassidus*.
I thank you for writing to me in detail to tell me how matters stand regarding all of this.
With my blessing*,
[Due to the sanctity of the festival (see note 4), the Rebbe* shlita* did not sign this letter and I do so on his behalf,
The secretary]
