1st day of Rosh Chodesh* Kislev* 5717
Brooklyn
Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter, whose delivery was somewhat delayed.
At an auspicious time, I will mention your name at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us, so that you obtain the fulfillment of your needs.
Moreover, you write that you wish to be connected and attached to Chassidus*, to its customs and practices. May Hashem grant that in this matter as well, the promise of our Sages be fulfilled: "When a person sanctifies himself a little here below, he is sanctified considerably from Above."
You ask me about the words of the Alter Rebbe* in chapter 30 of the Tanya*, which state that one must study the Torah* "far beyond one's desire and will, according to one's nature and habit." You ask what about someone who has only a little time to put all this into practice.
The Alter Rebbe* does not write merely that one must "study much." He specifies: "far beyond one's desire and will, according to one's nature and habit." From this perspective, those who are professionally active and those who devote themselves to study are identical. Both must overcome their nature and habit, in terms of desire and will.
The laws of Torah* study define the obligation of those who engage in business regarding Torah* study. Now, nothing can withstand the deep will of a Jew, who is capable of mastering his superficial will. You should consult the Rambam*, at the end of the second chapter of the Laws of Divorce.
Surely you are aware of the three well-known daily studies — Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya*. You will maintain them, at least from now on. But in addition to this, you must establish a fixed time for the study of the luminaire of the Torah* — that is, of Chassidus* — not only fixed in time, but fixed in the soul.
I received, in due time, the book of memoirs. I thank you for it.
With blessing to give good news, always and every day,
On behalf of the Rebbe shlita*,
the secretary,
