To the Rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs,
Rav David Moshe (see note 1),
Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter of 21 MarCheshvan*, in which you raise the problem of the day school on the West Side. The neighborhood in which you are currently located is not suitable, because the number of Jewish residents is constantly declining. There are therefore two possibilities: build in a new neighborhood or merge with the day school in Albany Park.
I am surprised that you do not mention a third possibility — that of finding a suitable building, or at least one requiring only minor modifications. It is clear that this should be the priority, since it will not be necessary to construct it entirely.
It is also clear that the merger with the Albany Park day school is viable only if the other two possibilities prove impracticable. You give, in your letter, reasons against this merger. And there is, furthermore, an essential reason for this, which is as follows: In our era, many new schools are needed, in the greatest number of neighborhoods. Of course, one must exclude, insofar as possible, the disappearance of those that already exist.
You say you lack means and people who act. In general, the solution to a problem depends, to a large extent, on the way it is approached. I mean that if the question is formulated in the following terms: "Should this day school be maintained, in this neighborhood or another, or should it be eliminated, for example by merging it with another school?" (see note 2) — one will tell oneself that there are arguments for and against each solution, that consequently no answer is self-evident, and that one may therefore fear difficulties, even imaginary ones.
This is not the case, however, if one adopts as one's perspective the need of the moment (see note 3). The number of children and young people in Chicago makes necessary a development of education based on sacred values — not only quantitative but also qualitative. It cannot be otherwise, and there is no doubt about this. One can then meditate with intensity on the means of overcoming the difficulties standing in the way. And in the end, the solution is found.
When one begins to act concretely, one can see that the difficulties are not as great as one might initially have imagined. This is self-evident.
With blessing,
