4 Kislev* 5717

Brooklyn

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 25 Cheshvan* and the telegram that preceded it. May Hashem grant that you soon inform me of good news regarding your concrete actions. For the time being, the protocol I have received from the leadership speaks only of preparations, of sorting among the various opinions, of the reasoning that might be considered.

You know the Mishnah* that states that the deed is essential. You also know that if one errs regarding a Mishnah*, one must start over, because such an error has no justification given the evidence.

It is clear that under normal circumstances, I would not have written to you this way. But for several months now, there has been talk, there have been preparations, programs have been established. Yet action has been on a reduced scale, bearing no comparison to the need of the moment, or even to the words spoken about these actions. There is therefore cause for concern about the future, far more than in domains where one has no prior reference. This is self-evident.

We have entered the month of Kislev*, the month of miracles, of the victory of all that concerns Chabad and of everything connected to it. May Hashem therefore grant that there be a change in this matter, a transformation from one extreme to the other — that from now on, you intensify your sacred mission, as the young people of the Chabad organization must do. The assurance has been given to us that in such a case, success will follow.

Every day, every hour, every moment that passes is lost. And lost time cannot be recovered. In this case, you are reinforcing the established pattern, the inactivity that has prevailed until now. And in this connection, our Sages note, poignantly, that "what should have been done was not done." There is, in this regard, a wonderful story of Rabban Yochanan ben Zakai, who concludes: "Be happy, Children of Yisrael*." You should consult Tractate Kesubos* 66b.

I said, through the distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem, Rav Shmuel Blizinski, that one must act, wage an offensive war. I spoke of war, but it is clear that this war must be pleasant and peaceful. And the discourse emphasized that deep within, every Jew desires to fully fulfill the mitzvos* of the Holy One, blessed be He, as the Rambam* rules at the end of chapter 2 of his Laws of Divorce.

The injunction: "Know the Elokim* of your father and serve Him" is a precept of supreme importance, which, moreover, surpasses all the mitzvos*, as the Kuntres Acharon* emphasizes on page 156b. Moreover, every heart sincerely desires this, at least to some degree, as the Tanya* explains in chapter 41, page 58a. All those who strive to draw others closer and to bring them the awareness of "the Elokim* of your father" themselves deeply desire this.

As you request, I will mention all those you cite at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us. We have entered Kislev*, the month of miracles and of the victory of the Alter Rebbe* and, with him, of all those who are attached and connected to him, in all that concerns them. You will therefore give good news of all this and of all that concerns Chabad, in one way or another.

Surely you have prepared the appropriate program to take advantage of the approaching days of the month of Kislev*, to the greatest extent possible.

With blessing to give good news,
