Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter of 10 Kislev*, date of the liberation of the Mitteler Rebbe*, in which you allude to the Chabad chassidim*, to chassidim* in general, and to their relationship with their fellow (see note 1).
In this matter, instructions were given to all chassidim* and, more broadly, to all Jews, by the Alter Rebbe*, founder of Chabad, in chapter 32 of the Tanya*. And the chassidic* discourse entitled "Enlist," in his Likkutei Torah*, explains it even more clearly. This idea is also expressed, in impassioned terms, by the Sefer HaMitzvos* of his grandson, the Tzemach Tzedek*, on the mitzvah* of loving one's fellow.
On the occasion of the luminous date of Yud-Tes Kislev* (see note 2) that is approaching, you will also consult the Iggeres HaKodesh* of the Alter Rebbe*, which he composed following the imprisonment to which he was condemned as a result of a denunciation. That text states: "This is the purpose of my words… All the chassidim* must know…"
Now, if he gave them such an admonition (see note 3), how much more must this apply to all Jews (see note 4), especially when Divine Providence has caused them to meet. Indeed, is it not remarkable that the Alter Rebbe*, in a well-known letter, relates that he was liberated while reciting the verse: "He has redeemed my soul in peace"? Now, the end of that same verse is: "They were numerous with me." This is self-evident.
I have given a relatively lengthy explanation about what is merely self-evident, because I am surprised by the content of your letter and by your conclusion that you are morally troubled by this situation.
I hope that you will participate in the chassidic* gathering on Yud-Tes Kislev*, festival of the liberation of the Alter Rebbe*. Our Sages say, indeed, that sharing a meal brings people closer. How much more so for those who are already close.
Awaiting your good news,
