To the leaders of the Chabad* Youth,

assembly of the holy city of Jerusalem,

may Hashem grant you long life,

Greetings and blessings,

I have duly received your letter of 16 Kislev*, followed by a second letter of the same date.

A particular demand now rests upon every Jew — in particular the chassidim* and especially the youth. All must carry out actions commensurate with the needs of the moment and the possibilities granted by Divine Providence.

One can observe that it is currently possible to elevate the Tradition of Yisrael*, the Torah* and its mitzvos*, and even to transmit Chassidus*, its customs and its practices, to the widest circles. Every moment, every hour that passes, is a frightful loss. Who knows whether such an opportunity will present itself again?

Regarding concrete actions and the use of these possibilities, I have not found, for the time being, anything conclusive in your letter or in the one that preceded it — even though it mentions a few decisions and past actions which, unfortunately, do not have the required scope.

It is clear that my intention is not to moralize, but rather to underscore the enviable destiny that Divine Providence has entrusted to you, so that you may take full advantage of it. It contains much good — spiritual and material good, visible and tangible good — and everything depends solely on your determination, for the strength and opportunities are granted to you from His open, holy, and generous hand.

Regarding these days of Chanukah*, it is said that "both of them express the words of the living Elokim" — the one who calls for decreasing (see note 1) and the one who calls for increasing (see note 2). In practice, one must reduce what belongs to evil and develop holiness. May Hashem therefore grant that you add success in all of this.

Every member of the Chabad* Youth and all together will fulfill their sacred mission: to diminish, from day to day, what pertains to evil in their surroundings and in their city. There, they will increase holiness and light — "the candle (which) is a mitzvah* and the Torah* (which) is a light" — as well as the luminary of the Torah*, its inner dimension: Chassidus*, its customs and its practices.

The sending of this letter was delayed, and I have just received your letter of 22 Kislev*, reporting the chassidic* gatherings of Yud-Tes Kislev* (see note 3), the date of our deliverance and the freedom of our souls.

May Hashem grant that from this Rosh Hashanah* of Chassidus* and all that pertains to it, your actions be multiplied and more fruitful throughout the year and in every domain.

For all these actions converge toward a single goal — the dissemination of the wellsprings (see note 4) outward, whose culmination will be the coming of our righteous Moshiach*, very soon and truly in our days.

With blessing for success and to give good news of all this,

מאשר הנני קבלת מכתבם מט"ז כסלו, וכן מכתב השני מיום הנ"ל...

דרישה נוספת עתה מכל אחד מבני ישראל וביחוד מאנ"ש וביותר מהצעירים, והם פעולות מתאימות לדרישת השעה ואפשריות הניתנות מהשגחה העליונה, והרי רואים בעליל שדוקא עתה יש לפעול להרמת קרן ישראל סבא לתורתו ולמצותי', עד כדי החדרת תורת החסידות והדרכותי' בחוגים רחבים, וכל רגע ושעה העוברים הם אבדה מבהילה, ומי יודע אם תהי' עוד אפשריות כזו, וע"ד פעולות ממשיות וניצול האפשריות האמורות, לעת עתה לא נמצא במכתבם זה ולא בהקודם (אף שיש בהם בהנוגע להחלטות ואיזה פעולות בעבר, ולצערנו בממדים בלתי מספיקים).

פשוט שאין כוונתי להטפת מוסר, אלא לעוררם על חלק היפה שהשגחה העליונה העמידתם עליו, ואשר ינצלו האפשריות במילואה, שרב טוב צפון בה, טוב הרוחני והגשמי ובטוב הנראה והנגלה, ואין הדבר תלוי אלא ברצונם, כי הרי הכחות והאפשריות נתנו מידו הפתוחה הקדושה והרחבה.

ויהי רצון שימי חנוכה האלו, אשר אלו ואלו דא"ח, שהולך ופוחת והולך ומוסיף, הולך ופוחת בעינים דלעו"ז והולך ומוסיף בענינים דקדושה, יוסיפו הצלחה בהעבודה האמורה, שכל אחד ואחד מצעירי אגו"ח וכולם יחדיו - ע"י עבודתם בקדש יהי' פוחת והולך מיום ליום בענינים דלעו"ז בכל הסביבה בכל העיר וכו', והולך ומוסיף בכל הסביבה ובכל העיר בעניני קדושה ואור, נר מצוה תורה אור ומאור שבתורה זוהי פנימיות התורה תורת החסידות הדרכותי' ומנהגי'.

נתעכב השילוח וז"ע נתקבל המכ' מכ"ב כסלו מההתועדויות דיט"כ, גאולתנו ופדות נפשו, ויה"ר אשר מר"ה זה לחסידות ועניני' תומשך תוספת פעולות מוצלחות בכל השנה כולה ובכל השטחים, והרי כולם מכוונים לנקודה התיכונה - הפצת המעינות חוצה ולשיא שלה - ביאת משיח צדקנו במהרה בימינו ממש.
