You pose the following question. Those who participate in the meal of a wedding are seated in groups, in accordance with the custom of the country, and several groups have more than ten people. Each group has its own table, but there are also servers who attend to all the tables and thus serve as a link between them. When the meal goes on at length, several groups recite the blessing at the end of the meal independently, without waiting for the blessing at the central table where the bride and groom are seated — without reciting the seven marriage blessings, nor the formula "joy is in His dwelling."
Is it proper to act thus and thereby exempt oneself from the seven marriage blessings?
It seems that the reasons for this practice are as follows:
A) Not everyone can remain until a late hour, due to their work, their state of health, or because time is precious — especially since the meal sometimes extends for reasons that are not positive.
B) Reciting the seven blessings at a table before they have been said at the central table would cause resentment among the families of the bride and groom.
The change in this practice would be as follows:
A) Everyone would have to wait until the end of the meal, which would result in many not coming at all. The joy of the bride and groom would be diminished, and the families would resent those who do not contribute their presence, as can be verified in practice.
B) At each table, one could recite the seven blessings over two cups, which would cause resentment, as stated. And again, those who fear causing such a reaction would not come to the wedding.
One way or another, a mitzvah* is involved. This custom has become widespread and no one seeks to prevent it. One may therefore consider that it is based on three elements:
A) According to the Shulchan Aruch*, chapter 193, end of paragraph 1, one must avoid the resentment of one's host, and for this reason ten people may separate from the assembly.
B) The end of paragraph 3 adds that even if this reason were not sufficient, and insofar as this custom is already in force, one may consider that not all have made the decision to share the same meal. Consult the Shulchan Aruch*, Yoreh De'ah*, chapter 88, paragraphs 2 and 3.
C) In the Shulchan Aruch*, Even HaEzer*, chapter 62, the Turei Zahav*, paragraph 7, and the Aruch HaShulchan*, paragraph 138 — which you cite in your letter — it is specified that the obligation of the seven blessings is contingent upon the meal being taken for the joy of the bride and groom.
One may therefore consider that the intention the guests have from the outset — namely, the desire to recite the blessing at the end of the meal without the seven marriage blessings, if the evening runs late — removes the fixed participation in the joy of the bride and groom.
In such a case, there is no occasion to recite the seven blessings. This is self-evident.
