To the great Rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem and carries out a sacred mission,

Rav Tzvi Hirsh (see note 1),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 22 Kislev*, in which you refer to the chassidic* gathering on the occasion of the luminous day of Yud-Tes Kislev* (see note 2), the day of our deliverance and the freedom of our souls. You regretted having invited wider circles, but there is no grounds for this. On the contrary, it was a judicious initiative.

Indeed, those who are closest can be invited on other propitious dates or even on Shabbos*. This is not the case for those who, at present, have only a very limited connection to Chassidus*. If they do not come on Yud-Tes Kislev*, when will they?

You tell me that certain words escaped you regarding the difference between the chassidim* and those who are not chassidim*. I am surprised that you did not think of what chapter 32 of the Tanya* says (see note 3) — which is the Written Law of Chassidus*. And my father-in-law, the Rebbe, explains this idea in a letter.

In this way, those who oppose Chassidus* because they do not know it will bear witness to what was said. Indeed, they wonder why one attempts to draw close those who are distant. All of this is self-evident (see note 4).

במענה על מכתבו מכ"ב כסלו, בו כותב אודות ההתועדות בקשר עם יום הבהיר י"ט כסלו, גאולתנו ופדות נפשנו, ואין יסוד למה שהצטער על מה שהזמין חוגים יותר רחבים, כי אדרבה טוב עשה, והחוגים הקרובים יותר יש להזמינם בשאר ימי סגולה ואפילו גם בשבתות, משא"כ אותם שלע"ע יש להם שייכות פעוטה ביותר לעניני חסידות, דאם לא בימי די"ט כסלו וכיו"ב, אימתי.

ובמ"ש אשר אחד נפלטו מפיו דבורים בהנוגע ליתר החסידים למי שאינם חסידים, לפלא שלא הדגיש האמור בתניא פרק ל"ב, והרי זהו תורה שבכתב של תורה החסידות וכמבואר במכתב כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר ויעידו על זה גם מנגדי (מחסרון ידיעת הענינים) החסידות, שאדרבה באים בטענה מפני מה מקרבים אפילו הרחוקים וק"ל...
