Igrot Kodesh · Letter 4989 — Faith & Bitachon

To my great pain, I receive here no news whatsoever of the actions of the chassidim* in the domain (see note 1) of Chabad* — and in particular the dissemination of the wellsprings (see note 2) outward.

It appears that what Hashem pointed to with His finger through the event that occurred recently (see note 3) has had absolutely no effect in this regard. Yet one could observe that when a man of flesh and blood announces a general mobilization, everyone joins the army without the slightest hesitation, without the slightest doubt, and then they carry out the orders — including those of individuals who have only one rank more than they, despite the closeness that exists between them. Sometimes, the one receiving the order possesses more qualities than the one giving it. Nevertheless, in this matter, it is the latter who retains priority.

The lesson that all of this delivers for the fulfillment of the mission entrusted by our holy masters, whose merit protects us — who stand between Hashem our Elokim and ourselves — is quite clear. They transmit the instructions of the King, King of kings, the Holy One, blessed be He, one of the most essential of which is: "You shall love your fellow as yourself." One must therefore convey an authentic Judaism — our Torah* and its mitzvos* — with the light and vitality of Chassidus*.

Yet in place of this, people devote themselves to every possible activity, and above all, I fear, to useless fright about what will happen tomorrow, about what will occur in an hour or two — which has no effect on concrete action at this very moment. Such fears prove that one has not strengthened one's trust in Hashem, that one's faith is merely superficial.

Thus, no one takes to heart the essential and profound mission — the dissemination of the wellsprings (see note 2) — which is especially the need of the moment, for the heart of Yisrael* is awake and stirred. Several breaches have been made in the wall that separates Yisrael* from its Father Who is in Heaven.

Naturally, it is out of the question to deny anyone extenuating circumstances. However, I try again and again to bring about the recognition, at last, of the true nature of the present situation — what this period demands of each and every one — and the awareness that no one will be saved by trivialities.

May Hashem grant that you find the right words to convey this message wherever your influence extends, and above all that your explanations be followed by action — not by empty decisions and mere words.

You will take advantage of the enviable portion that Divine Providence has entrusted to you for the good of each and every one within all of Yisrael*. And you will give good news of yourself and of all the members of your family — of a visible and tangible good.

... לצערי הכי גדול, אין מגיעות כל שמועות לכאן מפעולות אנ"ש בכרם חב"ד בכלל, ובהפצת המעינות חוצה ביחוד. וכנראה שאפילו ההוראה באצבע מלמעלה בהמאורע דזמן האחרון, לא פעלו בזה כלל וכלל כל תזוזה, וכשרואים בעיני בשר שכאשר איש בשר ודם קורא לגיוס - נשמעים בלי כל היסוס וספק וממלאים אחרי כן פקודות כל אלו הנמצאים בדרגא אחת למעלה ממקבל הפקודה, אף ששניהם בערך זה לזה, ולפעמים כמה מעלות במקבל הפקודה על נותן הפקודה, אלא שבמקצוע המיוחד יש לנותן הפקודה איזה קדימה.

ומובן הלימוד ומוסר השכל שצ"ל מזה - בהנוגע למלאות פקודת רבותינו נשיאינו זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע, העומדים בינינו ובין ה' אלקינו, ומוסרים פקודות מממה"מ הקב"ה ומהעיקרים בזה, ואהבת לרעך כמוך, שבמילא - צריך להחדיר יהדות אמיתית, תורתנו ומצותי' באור וחום חסידותי, ותמורת זה מתעסקים בכל הענינים האפשרים (וחוששני לכל לראש - בפחדי שוא מה יולד יום מחר, ומה יהי' בעוד שעה ושעתים, שאין מזה כל נפק"מ בהנוגע לפועל שעליו לעשות בהווה, והפחד מורה על החסרון בבטחון ושהאמונה היא בדרך מקיף), ואין איש שם על לב למלא התפקיד הנפשי והפנימי דהפצת המעיינות, שהוא דרישת השעה ביחוד, כיון שנתעורר לב ישראל ונזדעזע ביותר, וכמה חרכים נעשו בהמחיצה המפסקת בין ישראל לאביהם שבשמים.

פשוט שח"ו ללמד היפך זכות על מי שהוא, רק שמנסה הנני עוד הפעם ועוד הפעם, אולי בכל זה יתחילו להכיר באמיתית המצב, ומה השעה דורשת מאת כל אחד ואחת ואל ישעו בדברי הבל... ויהי רצון שימצא אותיות המתאימות להסביר את הנ"ל בכל מקום שהשפעתו מגעת, והעיקר שתהי' ההסברה באופן שתביא לפעולות ולא להחלטות ריקניות ולדברים בעלמא, וישתמשו בחלק היפה אשר ההשגחה העליונה העמידתם עליו, לטוב לכל אחד ואחת, בתוך כלל ישראל, ויבש"ט הוא וב"ב שיחיו בטוב הנראה והנגלה.
