To the great Rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav Yitzchak (see note 1),

Greetings and blessings,

I took note with pleasure, from your letter, of the chassidic* gathering on the luminous day of Yud-Tes Kislev* (see note 2), that of our deliverance and the freedom of our souls, and of the brief report of what was said there.

May Hashem grant that these words of encouragement exercise their effect throughout the entire year, as befits a Rosh Hashanah* (see note 3), in the same way that the head (see note 4) directs all the limbs of the body.

May Hashem also grant that this process go increasing, in accordance with the teaching of Chanukah*, which has just concluded. Indeed, one increases each day the light obtained from pure oil, "from the setting of the sun," "at the door of one's house toward the outside."

The central idea of all this is the dissemination of the wellsprings (see note 5), of the oil, until they reach the outside.

With my blessing to give good news.

You mention the statement of our Sages, cited in the first chapter of the Tanya*, that "the Holy One, blessed be He, saw that the righteous were few." Since no further precision is given, it is clear that this includes also the tzaddik* who is not perfect.

Concerning the lengthy exposition of the Tanya* at the beginning of chapter 5, you will consult the notes of the Tzemach Tzedek*, in the notes and summaries on the Tanya*, page 89.

נעם לי לקרות במכתבו מההתועדות דיום הבהיר י"ט כסלו גאולתנו ופדות נפשנו וראשי פרקים ממה שדבר אז, ויה"ר שיפעלו דברי ההתעוררות את פעולתם למשך כל ימי השנה כראוי לראש השנה בדוגמת הראש הפועל על כל האברים ויה"ר שיהי' באופן דמוסיף והולך בקדש, והרי זוהי הוראת ימי חנוכה דאזלינן מני' דמוסיף והולך מיום ליום באור הבא משמן טהור משתשקע החמה ועל פתח ביתו מבחוץ, והנקודה התיכונה בזה הפצת המעינות שמן עד שיגיעו גם חוצה.
