Brooklyn

Greetings and blessings,

After a particularly long interruption, I have received your letter of 15 Teves. I read with pleasure that you are continuing your studies at the yeshivah*. I hope that from time to time, you make an addition in this direction (see note 1), in accordance with the teaching of our Torah that one ascends in holiness.

Beyond the intrinsic importance of all of this, it is clear that you thereby multiply all the blessings of Hashem, in all the needs of a person and his family. Indeed, the Holy One, blessed be He, acts "measure for measure" (see note 2), but in a greatly increased manner.

You tell me that there are differences of opinion regarding the influence one can exert upon others. This is a fact. Nevertheless, everyone can influence his fellow and his surroundings, just as he is obligated to give tzedakah* in the material sense — an obligation that also applies to a poor person, as established by the law of our Torah. The same is true for moral tzedakah.

You conclude your letter by asking me whether you should cease your activity within the Torah group of Peilim* (see note 3) during the school year and maintain it only during the yeshivah vacation periods.

It is quite clear that this idea is totally excluded. The dissemination and strengthening of Jewish values are indispensable throughout the year. But of course, there are different ways of conducting an action within this organization. For some, it can be more sustained, prolonged over time. For others, at various levels, it has specific moments. For yet others, it is limited to free times from the yeshivah.

The answer to this question therefore depends on many factors, and in this matter, each person's case is specific. If one takes into account the current situation in the Holy Land, very few are those who can content themselves with disseminating Judaism only during yeshivah vacations. This is a time of mobilization for the love of Hashem, for His Torah, for the practice of mitzvos* in the finest manner, for the proper study of our holy Torah.

You will observe, at least from now on, the three daily studies that pertain to everyone, established by my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, of blessed memory. These consist of Chumash*, Tehillim*, Tanya* and are well known.

With my blessing,

For the Rebbe, shlita*,

the secretary,
