Greetings and blessings,

I am pained by the conclusion of your letter, in which you tell me that there is still nothing new (see note 1).

Referring to an act that is unambiguously forbidden, our Sages observe that "one who commits a transgression once and then a second time ends up considering it a permissible act." I am afraid that this applies, all the more so, to your situation (see note 2).

You are attending to all of this merely to discharge an obligation, out of habit. Now, it is surely unnecessary to reproduce the teachings of our Sages regarding what you are doing and its value. They are established and well known.

In general, the possibility of finding a good match transcends nature, and our Sages compare it to the crossing of the sea (see note 3), as it is stated: "A wise wife is granted by Hashem*." May it therefore be His will — even if you do not forge natural receptacles — to bring about, in this matter, a miraculous intervention!

Notes

(1) That the young man, the addressee of this letter, is still not engaged.

(2) That this young man is settling into a situation where it no longer seems absurd to him not to seek marriage.

(3) To show how difficult the union between a man and a woman is to achieve.

...מצערני סיום מכתבו אשר אתו אין עדיין כל חדש, וחוששני אשר אם בענין דבר מושלל בפשיטות אמרו עבר ושנה כהיתר נעשה לו, הנה ק"ו בענינו מתעסק לצאת ידי חובתו בלבד מפני ההרגל וכו' ובודאי שאין נחיצות להעתיק ולפרט מאמרי רז"ל המדברים בענין זה וערכו, שהרי ידועים הם ומפורסמים, ויה"ר שכיון שבכלל כל ענין שידוך וזיווג הוא למעלה מדרך הטבע וכמרז"ל הידוע המדמה זה לקרי"ס וכמ"ש ומה' אשה משכלת, הנה יה"ר שאפילו אם אינו עושה כלים בטבע יעשה הדבר בדרך נס.
