To the young Menachem Ben Tzion* (see note 1),

Greetings and blessings,

I have duly received your letter from the conclusion of Shabbos*, the hilula* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe (see note 2), whose merit protects us, together with the requests for blessings enclosed therein, as well as your previous correspondence. I thank you for having described the gathering of the Chassidim*. Surely you will maintain this positive practice in the future (see note 3).

May Hashem* grant that you multiply such good tidings. Thus you will tell me that these gatherings are taking place in an ever-increasing number of locations, with ever more participants. In this way, their quality will be ever greater. Indeed, in the domain of holiness, a quantitative addition leads, in time, to a qualitative improvement.

And our era is favorable for this. Certainly, one may ask what is the merit of this generation. But in fact, that is precisely the explanation (see note 4). This is self-evident.

This is also the response to the question you pose in your letter. You refer to someone who opposes the dissemination of Chassidus*. The sole and only conceivable reaction to this attitude consists of redoubling ardor and vigor, to the fullest extent possible, in order to disseminate the wellsprings (see note 5) until they reach the outside. Ultimately, these will reach even such individuals, for in time, they will necessarily repent of such actions.

All those who wish to heed me and who value the dissemination of the wellsprings can therefore demonstrate that they pay no attention to these meaningless statements — by strengthening themselves to develop the dissemination of the wellsprings. And there shall be no other reaction, which might, on the contrary, work against this dissemination.

Moreover, it has been explained that each person receives a certain number of days, and he is charged with bringing out the Presence of Hashem within them, and that everything is counted and measured. If one uses these days for another purpose, one does not fulfill the mission entrusted to him. For the youth of the Chabad* association and for the Chassidim in general, this mission is precisely dissemination.

Place therefore your trust in the living Elokim*, for Chassidus is His wisdom and His will. He will carry out the decision of the Heavenly Court, according to which, in all that concerns the fear of Hashem, the Torah, and the mitzvos*, they (see note 6) will prevail. It is a shame to waste time that should have been devoted to disseminating the wellsprings on other concerns. This is self-evident.

Surely you will explain all of this to your friends.

זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע עם הפ"נ המוסגרים בו וכן מכתביו הקודמים, ות"ח על כתבו אודות התועדות אנ"ש אשר בודאי ימשיך במנהג טוב זה גם להבא, ויהי רצון שיוכל להוסיף בבשורות טובות אלו, זאת אומרת שיתרבה מספר מקומי ההתועדויות ויתרבה גם כן מספר המשתתפים, ובמילא יתרבה גם כן באיכות, וכידוע אשר בקדושה ריבוי בכמות מביא סוף סוף גם לריבוי באיכות, ותקופתנו מסוגלת לזה אף שאכשור דרא בתמי' כי אדרבה היא הנותנת, וק"ל.

ובזה גם מענה למה שכותב במכתבו אודות מי שהוא שיצא נגד הענין דהפצת דא"ח אשר התגובה היחידית צ"ל אך ורק ע"י תוספת מרץ וכח ככל הדרוש להפצת המעינות עד שיגיעו גם חוצה, וסוף סוף יחדירו גם את הדומים להנ"ל, כיון שבמשך הזמן מוכרח שיעשו תשובה על מעלליהם האמורים, וכל אלו הנשמעים לי ואשר ענין הפצת המעינות יקר להם יכולים להוכיח אשר אין שמים לב כלל לדברים שאין להם שחר, על ידי שיתחזקו ויוסיפו בהפצת המעינות, ולא ע"י תגובות באופן אחר, שאדרבה הם מבלבלים לענין ההפצה, ובפרט ע"פ המבואר שלכאו"א ימים יוצרו ולו אחד בהם והכל במדה וקצבה, וכשמשתמשים בזה לענין אחר במילא חסר במילוי תפקידם הם, שבנוגע לצעירי אגודת חב"ד ובכלל לאנ"ש הוא ענין ההפצה, ונכון יהי' לבם בטוח באלקים חיים, אשר תורת החסידות דא"ח היא חכמתו ורצונו ית' שיקוים פסק בית דין של מעלה, שבכל עניני יראת שמים תורה ומצות תהי' ידם על העליונה, וחבל על הזמן שצריך להקדישו להפצת המעינות, להתעסק בו בענינים אחרים וק"ל, ובודאי יסביר את האמור גם לחבריו שי'.
