Greetings and blessings,

You inform me of your birthday, and here is my response.

Surely you have adopted the custom recently taken up by the Chassidim* (see note 1), consisting of giving tzedakah* on one's birthday, before the prayers of Shacharis* and Minchah*, or on the eve of that day if it falls on a Shabbos* or a festival, of undertaking additional study of the revealed part of the Torah and of Chassidus*, of being called to the Torah on that day or on the preceding Shabbos, and of studying the three passages of that day in the Chumash*, the Tehillim*, and the Tanya*.

May Hashem* grant that you have a year of success in the study of the Torah and the practice of the mitzvos* in the finest manner.

Regarding the program and organization of your studies at the Yeshivah*, you will follow the instructions of the administration.

One of the means of concentrating one's thoughts is to study from a text (see note 2) or, at the very least, with an open book before you, on the page that is the subject of your study. Likewise, one must guard oneself from the sins of youth (see note 3) and scrupulously observe the ritual immersion of Ezra (see note 4), as indicated in the Chassidic discourse on Parshas Vaeira*, by the Alter Rebbe*, printed in the Torah Or*, Lemberg edition of 5611 (see note 5).

בודאי נהג במנהג אנ"ש בזמן האחרון בנתינת צדקה ביום ההולדת לפני תפלת שחרית ומנחה או ביום שלפניו - כשחל יום ההולדת בש"ק או ביום טוב - לימוד שיעור נוסף הן בתורת הנגלה והן בתורת החסידות עלי' לתורה ביום ההולדת או בשבת שלפניו ולימוד שלשת השיעורים הקבועים ליום זה - בחומש תהלים ותניא - ביום ההולדת.

יה"ר מהשי"ת שתהי' שנת הצלחה אצלו בלימוד התורה וקיום המצות בהידור.

באופן לימודיו בישיבה וסדרם - צריך לעשות כהוראת ההנהלה.

מהעצות להתרכזות המחשבה - לימוד בפנים, ושעכ"פ יהי' הספר פתוח לפניו במקום בו לומד. הזהירות בעניני ח"ן (וזהירות בטבילת עזרא) - [כמובן מד"ה (דער פרומער) וארא לרבנו הזקן נדפס בס' תו"א לעמבערג תרי"א].
