Blessings and greetings,

I am responding to your letter from 1/12, in which you express the wish of your heart — that Hashem* grant you additional children, in good health, beyond your daughter, to whom Hashem will grant long life. You specify that your husband did not wish to consult a doctor in order to determine why you have not been expecting a child for several years.

The Torah advocates, as you know, the following approach. Hashem is the Creator of the world, Who directs it. He heals all flesh and performs wonders. Despite this, a person must follow the ways of nature and, according to the expression of our Sages, "the Torah has authorized the physician to heal." You must therefore speak about this once more to your husband. Both of you will consult a specialist in this matter and follow his prescriptions.

Simultaneously, both of you must of course strengthen yourselves in what concerns the Torah and the mitzvos*, observe in particular the laws of family purity and of modesty, give tzedakah*, and pray to He Who gives the Torah and the mitzvos, that He fulfill positively the wish of your heart.

It would be good to have your husband's tefillin* and the mezuzos* of your home checked, to ensure that they all conform to halachah*. You yourself will observe the positive practice of virtuous Jewish women, consisting of giving tzedakah before lighting the candles, on the eve of Shabbos* and the festivals, so that Hashem may grant your request.

Your letter seems to indicate that you are the daughter of a Kohen*. If your husband, for his part, is not a Kohen, it would be good, in addition to all that has been said, for him to become acquainted with the content of one of the tractates of the Talmud. It may, of course, be a small tractate — for example, tractate Kallah*.

במענה על מכתבה 1מ.12 בו כותבת אודות משאלות לבבם לטובה שיברכם השם יתברך בעוד ילדים חיים וקיימים נוסף על הבת שלהם שתליט"א ומוסיפה אשר בעלה לא רצה לשאול דעת רופא, מפני מה זה איזה שנים שלא נפקדו בבנים.

והנה ידוע הנהגת התורה אשר אף שהשם יתברך הוא בורא העולם ומנהיגו והרופא כל בשר ומפליא לעשות, בכל זה צריך האדם לעשות מה גם בדרך הטבע, ובלשון חכמנו זכרונם לברכה, התורה נתנה רשות לרופא לרפאות, ולכן צריך לדבר עוד הפעם עם בעלה, שי' אשר הוא וגם היא יתבקרו על ידי רופא מומחה במקצוע ויעשו כהוראתו,

ומובן שביחד עם זה צריכים להוסיף שניהם בעניני תורה ומצות וביחוד בשמירת חוקי ודיני טהרת המשפחה צניעות וכיוצא בזה וכן בנתינתם לצדקה, ולהתפלל לנותן התורה והמצוה שימלא משאלות לבבם האמורות לטובה.

ומהנכון שיבדקו התפילין של בעלה ואת המזוזות בדירתם שיהיו כולן כשרות כדין, והיא תשמור על מנהגן הטוב של בנות ישראל הכשרות להפריש לצדקה קודם הדלקת הנרות בכל ערב שבת וערב יום טוב למילוי משאלות לבבם האמורות.

כנראה ממכתבה הנה היא בת כהן, ואם הבעל שלה אינו כהן, אזי נוסף על כל האמור לעיל, נכון שיהי' בעלה בקי בתוכן איזה מסכת ממסכתות הש"ס ויכול להיות גם במסכתות קטנות וכמו מסכת כלה וכיו"ב.
