Igrot Kodesh · Letter 516 — Divine Sparks and the Metaphysics of Kelipah
Volume 3 · Letter 112
By the grace of Hashem,
13 Menachem Av* 5709,
To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,
Rav A.[1],
I greet you and bless you,
I am responding to your letter of 14 Tammuz*:
A) Several questions you raise regarding my letter[2] will no longer arise thanks to the general introduction I will now develop:
Chapter 6 of the Tanya* and the following chapters elaborate on the belonging of minerals, vegetables, animals, and humans to the force of evil that retains the possibility of elevation, or to those that are entirely impure. In this regard, a distinction must be made between the intrinsic belonging of a being and that which results from an action performed through it.
In the latter case, only the part of the being that enables the action to be performed and the place from which it originates is, of course, concerned.
I will give an example. The divine spark that brings a permitted food into existence and sustains it belongs to the force of evil that can receive elevation. This is permanently the case, including on Yom Kippur*[3], since it is clear that the holiness of that day takes nothing away from the holiness of the food.
Conversely, the divine spark that brings a forbidden food into existence and sustains it belongs to the totally impure forces of evil. This is permanently the case, including in a situation of danger[4].
Two essential distinctions can be made between these sparks:
1. The spark emanating from the force of evil that can receive elevation perceives its divine character, albeit in a limited way. The one that emanates from the totally impure forces of evil undergoes total concealment and becomes identified with evil itself, according to the expression of the Rebbe*[5] which I did not wish to reproduce in the summaries of the Tanya*, on page 143. You should therefore consult that text, as well as chapter 40 of the Tanya* and the summary of chapter 6.
2. The spark emanating from the force of evil that can receive elevation comes from a particularly high source of evil, which means it possesses considerable power — the greatest that exists — comparable to that of the lion and the ox, which distinguishes it qualitatively and not merely quantitatively from the spark emanating from the totally impure forces of evil. You should consult, at the end of the Derech Mitzvotecha* of the Tzemach Tzedek*, the Chassidic* discourse entitled Acharei* and its commentary.
It is clear that a Jew who consumes, on Yom Kippur*, a permitted food does not have the power, through this limited action, to change the order of creation, to extract from that food the spark emanating from the force of evil that can receive elevation and replace it with the one that emanates from the totally impure forces of evil. You should consult, in this regard, the notes of the Rebbe*[5] on chapter 6 of the Tanya*, cited in the summaries on page 115. This is why there is no question there of the intrinsic existence of the forbidden fruits of the first three years of harvest or of the species that intermingle in the vineyard[6].
In fact, just as this man encloses himself within the totally impure forces of evil, he also introduces the food and the divine spark it contains into them. The physical energy he invested in the act of eating is itself captive to these forces of evil and, again, the same applies to the food and its divine spark.
Conversely, the one who consumes a forbidden food when in a situation of danger[7] likewise does not alter its divine spark. Nevertheless, in such a case, our Sages eliminate the relationship between that spark and the totally impure forces of evil, which were obscuring its light and altering its perception. It is for this reason that its elevation becomes possible. You should also consult the Derech Mitzvotecha* of the Tzemach Tzedek*, in the third chapter on the Mitzvah* of Teshuvah* and other texts as well.
In any case, the divine spark present in the permitted food consumed on Yom Kippur* or in the forbidden food permitted to one who is gravely ill remains the same.
One may also wonder what applies to the convert, the beautiful woman[8], the Canaanite servant[9], and the pig's necks that were permitted for consumption. All of this will not be elaborated upon here.
Another point is established. When an action must introduce a modification emanating from another place, that action must itself originate from that place. This is what we have just shown.
I will cite an example. A Jew whose physical body and vital soul emanate from the force of evil that can receive elevation consumes a permitted food, which also emanates from that same force, without any particular intention, without consecrating it to the Name of Hashem, but also without seeking solely to satisfy his desires. In such a case, he does not in any way modify the origin and place of the spark and of the food, which rises only toward the human category, by merging with his flesh and blood — but this does not concern our present discussion.
The equivalent of all this is found in the revealed part of the Torah*, which distinguishes the prohibition specific to the object itself[10] from that which rests upon the person[11] and takes into account the presumed situation, in the absence of any other specification.
I will now briefly respond to the questions you have posed, taking them in the order of your letter.
B) How could I write, in the second explanation, that the study[12] is a Mitzvah* before the new month has been proclaimed? Before that, is not the study without a specific content?
I do not understand this question. Here is what I wrote: 'When the Torah expressly commands it' and, to be more precise, I emphasized the word Mitzvah*. Can this be called a study without specific content?
Clearly, I do not mean that one must study the Torah like Rabbi Yehoshua ben Chananya*, in the manner described in tractate Bechorot* 8a, that is, like the first explanation in my letter[13]. Only an elite can attain this, whereas the Torah takes into account the most common situation.
Likewise, it matters little whether one studies Greek wisdom or the astrology that our people once possessed and has since lost, as the Rambam*[14] explains. The language matters little; only the content must be taken into account.
C) What difference is there between the second and the fourth explanation? Is it not, in both cases, a matter of preparation, a preliminary phase to the Mitzvah*?
I specified the second explanation in my letter, as I mentioned earlier. It concerns a situation in which the Torah gives a direct command[15], which is not the case for the fourth. Would the calculation of the seasons and the astral influences, which according to some is a Mitzvah*, be considered negligible? And would it occur to anyone to catalog the infirmities of animals to determine whether they are permanent or temporary[16]?
You should consult the explanations and references given by the Moadim BeHalacha* regarding the importance of preparing for a Mitzvah*, for example by building a Sukkah*.
At the Chassidic* gathering of this Shabbat*, I commented at length on the statement of Moshe*, reported in tractate Makkot* 10a, according to which 'I will fulfill the Mitzvah* that presents itself to me' by establishing three cities of refuge on the other side of the Jordan. Yet he knew that these would be used only later[17].
D) The fifth explanation involves cunning[18], insofar as it is useful for earning a livelihood. You note that all of this must fit perfectly within the domain of holiness.
Here again, I did not understand the meaning of your remark, for commercial activity and earning a livelihood belong to the force of evil that can receive elevation. How could this possibly fit perfectly within the domain of holiness?
Nevertheless, as has been said, this is indeed that force of evil considered intrinsically. And the one who acts without any particular motivation is presumed to remain in the situation that was previously his.
You should consult, in this regard, Avot DeRabbi Natan*, chapter 11, and Iggeret HaKodesh*, chapter 9.
E) What difference should be made between the fourth and the sixth explanation, since in both cases the study is indeed for the Name of Hashem?
This difference is quite evident. By studying the sciences of the nations without any particular intention, one renders the intellectual faculties of one's divine soul impure, causing them to descend from the domain of holiness into that of evil.
Now, the descent of a Mitzvah* into the second domain of evil — its totally impure forces — is permitted only when it enables an immediate ascent, but not when it merely prepares for one. Thus, according to tractate Shabbat* 132b, a positive commandment overrides a prohibition when it is performed at the very moment the prohibition is lifted.
You should also consult the Mishneh LaMelech*, laws of the Pesach* sacrifice, at the beginning of chapter 10, and the Melo HaRoim*, volume 1, at the beginning of the article 'A Positive Commandment Overrides a Prohibition.'
In fact, the descent into the first stage of evil — the force that can receive elevation — should satisfy the same condition, and this is what the fourth explanation describes. The sixth introduces, however, a new element. Such a descent is conceivable, with regard to the force of evil capable of receiving elevation, also when it is only a matter of preparing for the Mitzvah* — and therefore doing so for the Name of Hashem.
F) The third explanation describes a study for the Name of Hashem that is not a Mitzvah* and whose object is negative — permitting, for example, the avoidance of a transgression, as I wrote.
You do not elaborate on this point. Indeed, it is forbidden to think words of Torah* in alleyways covered with filth. By making calculations related to secular sciences, one can protect oneself from this and thereby observe a Torah* prohibition — and not merely perform an action for the Name of Hashem.
The same difference exists between observing the principle 'in all your ways, know Him' and the actual performance of a Mitzvah*. This corresponds to the two situations described in chapter 7 of the Tanya* — eating to attain breadth of mind[19] or in order to fulfill the Mitzvah* of experiencing the pleasure of Shabbat* and the festivals.
You should also consult the end of chapter 34 of the Tanya*, which states: 'The fifth[20] brings elevation to the four other fifths. Furthermore, ...[21]'. This is, of course, an additional elevation.
G) The force of evil that permits elevation allows for two situations. If the person acts for the Name of Hashem, it rises toward holiness. Otherwise, it descends toward the totally impure forces of evil.
As I was saying earlier, this formulation, in my humble opinion, is not precise. For the one who does not act for the Name of Hashem, but is not motivated by any particular intention — in any case not the intention of satisfying his desires — maintains that force of evil capable of receiving elevation in its place[22].
This can be established on the basis of logic, as I said in the first paragraph of this letter. One can also observe what happens daily. Thus, the child who eats does not sink into the totally impure forces of evil and does not bring the food down into them. One can finally deduce this from the teachings of our Sages. Chapter 7 of the Tanya* speaks indeed of 'one who gorges himself to satisfy his desires.' The summaries of chapters 7 and 10 clarify this idea.
H) Why does the Admur HaZaken* write, at the end of chapter 7 of the Tanya*, referring to the Rambam* and the Ramban*[23], 'such is his motivation[24]' and not 'their motivation'?
It is particularly common for one word to bring along another, and an example of this is found in the weekly Parashah* — 'so that your servant and your maidservant may rest like you.' The verb yanua'ch*, to rest, is indeed in the singular in this verse. Onkelos*, whose Targum* is close to the verse, also uses the singular, yanua'ch*, while Yonatan ben Uziel*, who seeks rather the meaning of the verse, uses the plural, yanu'chun*.
I) Finally, how does one distinguish the science of idolatry from that of astrology?
The answer to this question can be found in what was said earlier.
Idolatry is forbidden and the verse says regarding it: 'Do not turn toward it.' It therefore belongs to the three totally impure forces of evil and carries within it sparks that originate from them. Such is its intrinsic place, and the study of its science — when the motivation to understand and teach[25] has been permitted by our Sages — in such a case, these sparks do indeed receive elevation.
The calculation of the astral cycle, for example, belongs to the force of evil that can attain elevation. Such is its intrinsic place, where it remains when the study has no particular motivation.
The science of idolatry or the astrology found within the Torah*, however, belongs entirely to the domain of holiness, on the same level as all other parts of the Torah*. Such is their intrinsic place, where they remain when the study has no particular motivation.
J) I have just seen, in the commentary of the Tzafnat Paaneach* on the Rambam*, at the beginning of the second chapter on the laws of idolatry, that it is forbidden to read books treating of an idol only when that idol still exists, but not when it has disappeared. This assertion is based on the Yerushalmi*, in the third chapter of tractate Avodah Zarah*. This is why the Rambam* read these books.
However, one can genuinely question such an assertion. Indeed, it is clearly stated in the Guide for the Perplexed*, volume 3, chapter 29, that this idolatry still exists in the far North and in India. It is difficult to consider that the service of an idol is taken into account only if it is performed in a large city, according to the expression of the Yerushalmi*. You should consult the commentators on the Guide for the Perplexed*.
Furthermore, you know that in India there are, at the present time, many idolatrous groups in major cities who have adopted, at least partially, such practices. This point will not be elaborated upon here.
I conclude by wishing you all the best,
M. Schneerson,
The archives of the Otzar HaChassidim* publishing house gather information and documents on the history of the Chassidim*. Wherever possible, photographs are also sought[26]. Perhaps you could write a note about this, or about your grandfather[27], or about other individuals you have known or about whom you possess documents?
Obviously, it is necessary to indicate the source of this information — whether it is the testimony of an eyewitness, tradition, family transmission, letters, or other.
