and devotes himself to communal needs,

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter from the 22nd of Shevat.

Enclosed you will find my response to Mr. Sherman. You will surely know how to explain it to him, if necessary.

You ask me whether you may participate in communal activities (see note 2). You presumably allude to what concerns your neighborhood, in which there are Jews and non-Jews.

It is difficult to set strict rules in this matter. The idea is as follows: one must exclude everything that may be interpreted as support for a movement of brotherhood (see note 3) in the broad sense (see note 4), or brotherhood with the leaders of the Reform and Conservative movements, which Hashem forbid.

Of course, this is true if it concerns religious activities — in other words, if someone is present as a representative of the Reform movement. It is not the same if it concerns a person presenting himself in an individual capacity and a general activity — for example, one related to tzedakah*.

Indeed, you know the teachings of our Sages in this matter, as well as the concrete examples given by several great ones of Israel, who fear the word of Hashem and who participated in such gatherings. But of course, one should not seek out such occasions.

הנה מוסגר בזה המענה שלי למר שערמאן שי' ובודאי ימצא האותיות המתאימות להסביר לו הענינים אם נצרך לכגון דא.

במ"ש אודות השתתפותו בענינים העממים (כנראה כוונתו של יהודים ולהבדיל אינם יהודים ביחד בשכונה)

הנה קשה לקבוע מסמרים בכגון דא, והנקודה היא שיש לשלול כל ענין שיתפרש כהסכם על התנועה של בראדערהוד באופן רחב או של בראדערהוד עם הרעפארמער וקאנסערוואטיווע ר"ל, אבל מובן שזהו באם ענין דתיות בזה הכוונה, במלות אחרות עם ב"כ התנועה של רעפארם וכו' משא"כ בהנוגע לאיש בתור פרטי בענין כללי של צדקה וכיו"ב שבזה ידועות הוראות רז"ל בכ"מ וגם מעשה בפועל של כמה גדולי ישראל החרדים לדבר ה' שמשתתפים ונפגשים אף שכמובן אין לחפש הזדמנויות כאלו.
