Greetings and blessings,

After a particularly long interruption, I received your letter from the 24th of Shevat*, in which you briefly describe the Chassidic gathering held with your students. Although you do not specify it, you are surely endeavoring, in the proper manner, pleasantly and with the necessary discretion, to ascertain what their behavior is when they are not under your supervision and vigilance.

This concerns, in particular, Shabbos*, which is "holy to Hashem*." Yet it is precisely on this day that the students are left to themselves. For not all parents know how to guide them as they should.

Of course, what I say concerns not only you and your class, but all those who provide a proper education based on sacred values, as has been explained at length on another occasion.

Indeed, our era does not resemble past periods, when the cheder* and the Yeshivah* had as their sole purpose to impart knowledge. In our day, their essential role is to form Jews who observe the Torah and the mitzvos*.

For children living in homes where the Torah and the mitzvos are perfectly observed also spend time in the street, where undesirable winds blow. It follows that the guidance of children during Shabbos, the festivals, and more generally when they are not in a good school, also rests upon the educators.

However, the manner of guiding them during these days and hours must be completely different from that of study time. Very often, the parents' help is necessary. However, the initiative and the responsibility belong to the educators, as I have said.

May Hashem grant that you accept all of this and understand it well. In this way, you will find the words to explain it to your friends, who devote themselves like you to proper education.

לאחרי הפסק הכי ארוך נתקבל מכתבו מכ"ד שבט, בו כותב ראשי פרקים

מההתועדות עם התלמידים, ובודאי אף שאינו מזכיר עד"ז משתדל לחקור באופן המתאים בדרכי נועם ובחשאית הדרושה אודות הנהגת התלמידים מחוץ לשעות בם נמצאים בהשגחתו ובפקוחו, ובפרט בימי הש"ק אשר קדש הוא לה', ולאידך גיסא דוקא אז התלמיד נמצא ברשות עצמו ולא כל ההורים יודעים באיך לכוונם בכיוון הרצוי.

מובן שדברי בזה לא רק בהנוגע לו ולכתתו, אלא לכל העוסקים בחינוך הכשר על טהרת הקדש, וכמבואר בארוכה בהזדמנות אחרת, אשר לא כימים הראשונים ימים אלו, שהחדר והישיבה היו תפקידם רק בהנוגע להוספת ידיעות, משא"כ בזמננו שתפקידם העיקרי הוא חינוך להיות יהודי שומר תורה ומצוה, ואפילו בהנוגע לילדים שבבתיהם שמירת התורה והמצוה כדבעי, גם הם נמצאים משך זמן ברחוב בו מנשבים רוחות בלתי רצויות, וכו' - שמזה מובן שהאחריות של הנהגת הילדים בימי הש"ק ויום טוב ובכלל באותן השעות שאינם נמצאים במוסד המתאים, גם היא על שכם המחנכים שלהם, אף שמובן שצורת הפקוח עליהם בימים ושעות אלו - אפשרית רק באופן אחר לגמרי מאשר בשעות הלימוד, ולפעמים תכופות נזקקים בזה לעזר ההורים וכו' אבל היוזמים בזה והאחריות הוא, כנ"ל, על שכם המחנכים.

ויה"ר שיתקבל כל הנ"ל אצלו ויונח בהנחה טובה, ואז בודאי ימצא האותיות אך להסביר הדברים לחבריו בשטח החנוך הכשר, והשי"ת יצליחו.
