To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav Yaakov (see note 1),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your two letters of 26 and 28 Shevat*, in which you inform me of the various proposals that the people of Porto Alegre and the communal leaders have made to you.

The school (see note 2) has several hundred students and, from what you write, its director does not observe the Torah* and Mitzvos*.

In my view, it is not good, for the time being, that you be under the authority of this director. In this situation, it is very difficult to imagine that you could change anything, and there is concern that he would use you as a seal of approval for everything that takes place in the school.

It will not be the same if you have another source of livelihood, yet you strive to act for the benefit of this school, without it being the source of your sustenance. Your wishes and instructions will likely be given greater consideration, without people regarding you as endorsing their conduct, claiming that it has your approval. For you will not be one of the school's administrators.

This does not preclude you from teaching religion in this school, if there is no risk that this would be interpreted as your endorsement. Even though one must be cautious, it is nevertheless good to act in this way. Thus, you will know what is happening there and your voice will be better heard.

People will see that you are often in the school, without it costing the school anything, without encroaching on its honor. In this way, the influence you exert on the place will be greater.

במענה על שני מכתביו מכ"ו וכ"ח שבט, בם כותב אודות ההצעות השונות אשר קבל מאנשי פארטא אלערגא ועסקני'.

והנה ענין בית הספר שלומדים בו כמה מאות ילדים והמנהל הוא כפי כתבו אינו שומר תומ"צ וכו'.

לדעתי לע"ע אין כדאי שיכנס לשם בתור מקבל מהמנהל כי אז רחוק מאד שיוכל לשנות הענינים לע"ע, ויש מקום לחשש שישתמשו בו בתור הכשר על כל הנהגות בית הספר. משא"כ אם עסקו יהי' ענין אחר אלא שישפיע להיטיב ככל מה דאפשר בעניני ביה"ס ולא יהי' תלוי בהם בעניני פרנסתו, בודאי ישמעו יותר לרצונו ולהוראותיו ולא יוכלו להכשיר כל הנהגתם ולאמר שזהו בהסכמתו, שהרי לא יהי' מהאנשים האחראים לעניני הביה"ס, אין הנ"ל שולל אשר לעתים קבועים ילמוד בביה"ס לימוד דתי, ובלבד שיהי' באופן שלא יהי' מקום לחשש הכשר כלל, ואם יש להזהר מזה אדרבה, נכון הענין כיון שעי"ז ידע במה שנעשה שם ויותר יוכרחו להשמע להוראתו, ועוד לאחר שיראו שיוצא ונכנס בביה"ס בכ"ז אינו מקפח פרנסתם וכבודם וכו' גם זה יועיל להגדלת השפעתו שם...
