Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 16 Adar Rishon*, in which you describe your state of mind, which sometimes even prevents you from carrying out your sacred mission — that of education.

The explanation for this is found in several texts, in particular the holy Tanya*. Sadness, whatever form it may take, whether it is inspired by heavenly concerns or by earthly contingencies, can emanate only from the yetzer hara* (evil inclination). You will find, in these texts, a lengthy explanation on this subject.

How much more so is this the case for you, who have witnessed the obvious miracles and kindnesses of Hashem with your own eyes of flesh (see note 1). It is therefore quite clear that this sadness is unfounded. On the contrary, you must increase your joy, in accordance with the conclusion of the laws of Purim* in the Shulchan Aruch*, which is also the conclusion of the entire Orach Chaim*: "He who has a good heart finds himself perpetually in a feast" (Mishlei* 15:15).

Moreover, even now, Divine Providence has entrusted you with an enviable portion — the education of the children of Israel. There is no mission more sacred or more pleasant than this. Hashem derives immense pleasure from it, and one can deduce from this the reward of the one who provides it to Him.

The days of this month, during which you will receive this letter (see note 2), possess a special quality: "They were transformed for them into joy and celebration" (see note 3).

This transformation means that this month changes what is not a visible and tangible good into joy and celebration, which can be observed with one's eyes of flesh. May Hashem grant that this month exert its effect in this domain as well.

שלום וברכה!

במענה על מכתבו מט"ז אד"ר, בו כותב אודות מצב רוחו אשר מפריע לו גם כן לפעמים במלאכתו מלאכת שמים מלאכת החינוך.

וכבר מבואר ענינו בכמה מקומות ומהם בספר תניא קדישא, אשר ענין העצבות באיזה אופן שלא יהי', הן ממילי דשמיא והן ממילי דארעא, אין זה אלא מעצת היצר, וכמבואר שם בארוכה, ובפרט בהנוגע אליו, אשר ראה נסים גלוים וחסדי השי"ת גם בעיני בשר, פשוט שאין כל יסוד לעצבות, ואדרבה צריך הוא להרבות בשמחה, ועל דרך החותם דהלכות פורים אשר בשו"ע וסיום כל חלק אורח חיים, וטוב לב משתה תמיד, ובפרט שגם עתה העמידתו ההשגחה העליונה על חלק היפה, חינוך בני ישראל, שאין לך עבודה קדושה ונעימה יותר מזה, גורם נחת רוח עצום למעלה, שמזה מובן גם שכרו של הגורם נחת רוח זה.

ויהי רצון שימי חדש זה - שאז יתקבלו שורותי אלה - שמסגולת החדש הוא - אשר נהפך להם לשמחה וליום טוב.

וענין נהפוך, הרי תוכנו, אשר אפילו ענינים שאינם טוב הנראה והנגלה, מסוגלים ימי חדש זה, להפוך אותם לשמחה וליום טוב נראים לעיני בשר, יפעלו פעולה זו בעניניו הנ"ל.
