Igrot Kodesh · Letter 522 — Scholarly Comments on Pardes HaAretz
Volume 3 · Letter 118
To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,
Rav I.[1],
I received your letter with the photograph[2]. You will no doubt find in your city Chassidim* attached to the Rebbe who, in time, will do likewise, especially in these propitious days devoted to Teshuvah*.
Indeed, during the first forty days[3], during which Hashem was satisfied, the Jewish people were compared to the Righteous, whereas during the third period of forty days[4], they attained Teshuvah*.
I received, these past days, your book Pardes HaAretz, sent from New York, without any accompanying letter. If this is a gift from you, I thank you for it.
Time does not permit me to examine this book as it ought to have been done, but to demonstrate my interest, I will offer a few remarks after a hasty reading:
A) Page 65: Regarding Aristotle[5], I do not have your book Yavo Shilo. I have not, for the moment, found what you say in the seventh chapter of Sefer HaGilgulim*, nor in the other writings of the Ari Zal*. Obviously this proves nothing, and I would be grateful if you could kindly communicate this reference to me. What the Seder HaDorot* says on this subject, citing various books, is well known.
B) At the beginning of the chapter of responsa, pages 80 and 81, the definition given of choice can be refined according to the halachic ruling of the Tzemach Tzedek*, volume 2, page 24 and the addenda at the end of volume 3.
C) Page 107: The one who consulted you[6] gave the name of a deceased person and not of a living one. There is therefore no reason to think that the Jewish custom has been changed in this matter, especially since this man did not know that a grandmother, still living, bore the same name. One need only take into account the reason you invoked — the fact that some are strict in this regard[7] — for it is said: 'Do not open your mouth...'[8]
Furthermore, in Sefer Chassidim*, chapter 60, it appears that only one who gives the name of his father while the father is still alive is discussed.
D) Page 105: My father and my uncle married two sisters, with the consent of the Rebbe[9], who simply asked them not to live in the same city. The questions raised by the Noda BiYehudah* on this subject, regarding the Talmud, find their explanation in the Mekor Chesed*, commenting on Sefer Chassidim*. And it suffices to see the outcome of the account that our Sages relate on this subject, according to Yerushalmi* Taanit 4, 5.
E) Page 123: You address the case of one who transmits a bill of divorce before the witnesses of this transmission, then has the witnesses of the divorce sign it, and transmits the bill of divorce once more. It appears necessary in such a case, and for various reasons, to have another bill of divorce drawn up and transmitted anew.
F) At the beginning of the section of commentaries, on page 213, you analyze the question of the Keli Yakar*. You will note in this regard that having knowledge of the chain of worlds is 'an important and considerable Mitzvah*', according to the expression of the Tanya* on page 156b and tractate Shabbat* 77b.
G) In the Parasha* of the week[10], pages 501-502, regarding the verse 'I declare this day before Hashem your Hashem that I have come to the land', your explanation is difficult to understand. For it is indeed said: 'you shall come to the Kohen*' and not to the king or the ruler, 'this day', as it says 'I have come this day', emphasizing that this is something new, that one is 'settled in the land' only because one has merit for it, this day. Moreover, personal merit does not suffice and in truth 'Hashem swore to our fathers to give it to us'. It is only after having pronounced this thanksgiving that 'the Kohen takes'[11].
