Greetings and blessings,

You write to me that you do not know what I think of your activities (see note 1). Now, it is quite clear that every achievement carried out with the aim of drawing the hearts of the children of Israel close to our Father Who is in Heaven is particularly important, in every place and at every time, especially in our Holy Land and in this generation of ikvesa d'Meshicha* (the footsteps of Moshiach*) (see note 2). How much more so is this the case when one brings salvation by leading from darkness to great light.

However, there are several categories of actions that belong to the domain of holiness, as I have written many times (see note 3), based on the verse: "They made me keeper of the vineyards, but my own vineyard I have not kept" (Shir HaShirim* 1:6). Thus, the Torah* itself bears witness that these (see note 4) are indeed vineyards. Nevertheless, one is entitled to lament that "my own vineyard I have not kept."

However, as I have already written, it is not customary to abandon one's source of livelihood before having found another means of sustenance. This indeed applies to your situation.

You make reference to the tithe (maaser*) (see note 5). I have already written (see note 6) to several Chassidim* that the option of giving it in addition to the tzedakah* offered until now, or of including it in that amount, depends on the means of each individual. But in any event, it is quite evident that this is in no way a reduction of what has been given until now. On the contrary, it must be increased. This means that when someone comes to collect for a certain institution, one cannot tell him that one already gives to the fund that I administer, for the purpose of that fund is to add, not to diminish. This is self-evident.

... ובמ"ש שאינו יודע חוות דעתי בהנוגע למעשיו, הנה מובן ופשוט שכל פעולה המקרבת לבם של בני ישראל לאבינו שבשמים, נעלית היא ביותר וביותר בכל מקום ובכל זמן ועאכו"כ באה"ק ת"ו ובדרא דעקבתא דמשיחא, ובפרט כשמצילים עי"ז מאפלה לאור גדול, מובן ג"כ שבפעולות דקדושה עצמן כמה דרגות הם, וכמו שכתבתי כמה פעמים בזה, נשען על הכתוב שמוני נוטרה את הכרמים (ז. א. התורה עצמה מעידה שכרמים הם, ובכל זה מתאוננים, ש)כרמי שלי לא נטרתי, אבל כמו שכתבתי מכבר, אין הנוהג להזניח ענין של פרנסה טרם שמזמינים מקור פרנסה מתאים, וה"ה בהנוגע לנדון דידי'.

במ"ש אודות המעשר, כבר כתבתי לאיזה מאנ"ש, שזהו תלוי ביכולת של כאו"א, אם שיהי' המעשר הנ"ל נוסף על מעשר לצדקה שעד עתה, או שנכלל בזה, אבל מובן וגם פשוט, שאין הכוונה כלל וכלל לתת מגרעות בהצדקות שנהגו עד עתה, כי אם להוסיף עליהם, ז. א. כשבאים מאיזה מוסד אין לומר שנותנים כבר לקופה על דעתי, כי ענינה להוסיף ולא לגרוע, וק"ל...
