Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 23 Adar Rishon*, which came after a long interruption.

In accordance with your request, I will mention your name and that of the members of your family at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, so that you obtain the fulfillment of your needs, in accordance with what you write me — in particular, that you earn a better livelihood, as you elaborate at length in your letter.

It is unnecessary to point out to you that for a Jewish man, material sustenance is linked to spiritual sustenance. This Jew belongs, indeed, to "one nation on earth" (see note 1), as the Alter Rebbe* explains — including when he finds himself in a material world, with material concerns.

Consequently, the more you strengthen your spiritual sustenance — which depends on you, for "everything is in the hands of Heaven except the fear of Heaven," and every Jew receives free will for this purpose — the more your material sustenance will be strengthened, for it depends on the One Who gives the Torah*, commands the Mitzvos*, and provides sustenance for each person. And "to whoever adds (see note 2), more is added (see note 3)."

It would be particularly advisable for you to give a few coins to tzedakah* each weekday before the morning prayer, and also before Minchah*. Naturally, you will adopt this practice without making it a vow.

P.S.: You are surely maintaining the three studies that concern everyone, instituted by my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us. These concern the Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya*, and are well known.

במענה על מכתבו מכ"ג אד"ר, לאחרי הפסק הכי ארוך.

כבקשתו אזכירו וב"ב שיחיו על הציון הק' של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע להמצטרך להם מתאים לכתבו, ובפרט להרחבת הפרנסה אודותה מאריך במכתבו.

ובודאי למותר לעוררו אשר באיש הישראלי פרנסה הגשמית קשורה בפרנסה הרוחנית, כי הרי נקראים גוי אחד בארץ, וכפירוש רבנו הזקן אפילו בארץ הגשמית ובענינים הגשמים, שמזה מובן שככל שיוסיף מצדו בעניני פרנסה רוחנית (שזהו תלוי בו שהכל בידי שמים חוץ מיראת שמים ובחירה חפשית ניתנה לאיש הישראלי), יתרבה בפרנסה הגשמית (התלוי' בנותן התורה ומצוה שהוא דוקא הזן ומפרנס לכל), וכל המוסיף ומוסיף מוסיפין לו.

ומהנכון בפרט שבכל יום חול קודם תפלת הבקר יפריש איזה פרוטות לצדקה וכן גם לפני תפלת המנחה, אף שמובן שצ"ל בלי נדר.
