Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of the first day of Rosh Chodesh* Adar Sheini*, in which you formulate various requests.

It is surely unnecessary to remind you that among Jews in general, and among yeshivah* students in particular, everything depends on one's conduct in the domain of the Torah* and the Mitzvos*, as it is said: "If you walk in My statutes" (Vayikra* 26:3). Rashi*, based on the Sifra*, explains: "by putting your effort into Torah* study."

The verse continues: "And you will observe My commandments... I will give your rains in their time." And our Sages explain the meaning of this effort for the Torah*. Indeed, whatever capacities one possesses, it is only through effort that one can achieve results.

Our Sages say: "One who says he tried but did not succeed — do not believe him" (Megillah* 6b). Conversely, one who possesses the highest qualities, who studies the Torah* and practices the Mitzvos* with ease because he has a good nature, must nonetheless intensify his ardor and his constancy until he too attains the level of effort.

How much more is this so when one formulates a specific request for oneself and for one's family. It is clear that in such a case, the increase in everything just described must be considerable.

I hope that in addition to your regular studies, you are also maintaining the three studies concerning the Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya*, which are well known. Our Sages say, moreover, that "one gives a coin to a poor person before praying." You will therefore give, each weekday before the morning prayer, a few coins to tzedakah*.

May Hashem grant you the merit of giving good news concerning everything you write in your letter.

בטח מיותר להדגיש שיהודים בכלל ובני ישיבה בפרט ,כל עניניהם

תלויים בהנהגתם בענינים של תורה ומצוות ,וכמה שכתוב אם בחוקותי

תלכו ,ופירש רש״י והוא מספרא ,שתהיו עמלים בתורה ואת מצוותי

תשמרו וגו׳ ונתתי גשמיכם בעתם וגר ורז״ל מדייקים בלשון ,עמלים

בתורה ,פירוש ,ש]עם[ איזה כשרונות שרק יהיו ,ניתן להגיע למילוי

הציווי ע״י עמל ,וכמאמר רז״ל יגעת ולא מצאת אל תאמין ,וגם מצד

שני ,גם בעל הכשרונות הטובים ביותר ,שלימוד התורה וקיום המצוות

בא לו בנקל מצד טבעו הטוב ,מוכרח גם הוא להוסיף בהתמדה ושקידה

עד שגם אצלו תהי׳ ההנהגה דעמלים,

ובפרט כאשר ישנה בקשה מיוחדת אודות עצמו ובנוגע לבני בית,

הרי ההוספה בכל האמור הכרחית מכל שכן וקל וחומר,

הנני מקוה שבהוספה לשיעורים שיש לך ,אתה שומר גם את

שלושת השיעורים בחומש תהלים ותניא הידועים ,וגם על-פי מאמר

רז״ל יהיב פרוטה לעני והדר מצלי ,אתה נותן בכל יום חול לפני התפילה

בבוקר כמה סנט לצדקה והשי״ת יזכה אותך לבשר בשורות טובות בכל

מה שאתה כותב במכתבך.
