Igrot Kodesh · Letter 525 — Rosh Hashana as Head of the Year

Volume 3 · Letter 121

By the grace of Hashem,

26 Elul* 5709,

To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav I.[1],

I greet you and bless you,

On the occasion of the new year, I send my blessing to you and to all your household for a good and sweet year in every domain.

It is known that there are two ways of interpreting the name of Rosh Hashanah*:

A) It is the beginning of the year, introducing the profane time, the sabbatical year, the time for fulfilling the Mitzvah*.

B) It is also the head of the year, as the Likkutei Torah* explains in Parshat Tavo*: 'Rosh Hashanah is the head and not the beginning of the year, for just as the head constitutes the intellectual part of the body, the year likewise has a head, which is Rosh Hashanah*.'

What has just been said finds application in the service of Hashem. It is known that the intellect must govern the emotions. The head directs all the limbs of the body, and so it is with the state of mind of a Jew in these awesome days, when 'the spark is close to the torch.' And the verse Yechezkel* 9:1 underscores that Yom Kippur* is also called Rosh Hashanah*[2].

Thus, Rosh Hashanah* can condition the conduct of the entire year.

It is explained in a note of the Likkutei Torah*[3]: 'This evokes the skull, which covers the brain and evokes the revelation of the Divine Will.'

In other words, the head that Rosh Hashanah* constitutes is not bound to intellect and understanding. One who does not act until he has understood contradicts the deeper dimension of Rosh Hashanah*, which reveals the Will of Hashem — 'the skull that covers the brain.'

One must serve Hashem by accepting the yoke of His sovereignty, which is, moreover, a pleasant yoke. And our Sages say, in tractate Berakhot* 17a: 'It is our will to fulfill Your Will.'

How much more so this year, when the first day of Rosh Hashanah* is a Shabbat*. It is therefore on that day that the count of the new year begins. During Shabbat*, secular activities are forbidden and one must devote oneself to the service of Hashem.

The encouragement that this Rosh Hashanah* can provide is therefore entirely different. It influences the rest of the year with greater vigor and grants an abundant blessing.

I conclude by wishing you to be inscribed and sealed for a good year. I look forward to your good news, material and spiritual.

Rav Menachem Schneerson,

Director of the Executive Committee[4],
