Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter from motzaei Shabbos*. You tell me that there exist several versions of the Chabad* melodies (nigunim*), which also differ from the version that appears in the Sefer HaNigunim* (see note 2).

When these versions are transmitted from one Chassid* to another, one can accept that they emanate from a single source — that is, that there was originally one Chabad* melody, and that over time, those who received and transmitted it modified it or added to it, as is human nature.

If it is impossible to determine which version is the most faithful, both should be preserved when there are two. It is otherwise, however, if one version emanates from a large number of people and has been transmitted over several generations, while the other is solely the product of a few, without it being known how it was formulated. In such a case, one should adopt the version that is the most widespread.

Regarding the melodies for which you possess a version different from that of the Sefer HaNigunim*, it would be good to consult a specialist who can present them in the form of musical notation and to send them, here, to Nichoach* (see note 3), explaining how they reached you. Here, we will endeavor to clarify matters to the extent possible.

No doubt you will take advantage of the days of Purim* in the proper manner, the central point being the spreading of the wellsprings (see note 4) to the outside.

May Hashem grant you success in all domains.

במענה על מכתבו ממוצש"ק, בו כותב אשר ישנם נוסחאות שונות בנגוני חב"ד, ושונים גם מכמו שנדפסו בספר הנגונים.

הנוסחאות שנמסרים מחסידים לחסידים יש מקום לומר ששתיהם ממקור אחד באו, ז. א. שזהו נגון חבד"י אלא שבמשך הזמן המקבלים ומוסרים שינו או הוסיפו, וכידוע בטבע בני אדם, ובמקום שאין לברר איזה נוסחא מבוססת יותר, יש לשמור על שתי הנוסחאות, משא"כ במקום שיש פלוגתא בין נוסח שנתאשר ע"י רבים וע"י קבלה מאיזה דורות, ומצד השני ע"י מועטים ושאין יודעים באיזה אופן באו לנוסח זה, אז יש לבכר הנוסחא המקובלת.

ומהנכון הוא, שאותם הנגונים בהם קבל אחרת מהרשום בס' הנגונים, יבקש המומחה לזה לרושמם בתוי נגינה ולשלחם לכאן לח' ניחוח בצירוף סדר ההשתלשלות איך באה הנוסחא אליו וישתדלו כאן לברר בזה את האפשרי.

בודאי ינצלו ימי הפורים הבע"ל באופן הדרוש, ובנקודה התיכונה הפצת המעינות חוצה והשי"ת יצליחו בכה"ע.
