Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 22 Adar Sheini*.

I read with dismay that you are considering traveling aboard a ship whose sailors, crew, and captain are Israeli (see note 1) and that this voyage will also continue during the day of Shabbos*, which is an obvious transgression in which the passengers participate in equal measure.

How is this possible? How can a young man studying at Yeshivas Tomchei Temimim*, or more generally, at a yeshivah* (see note 2), conceive of such an idea? Moreover, you ask me for my agreement regarding this and you conclude your letter by saying that you would thereby strengthen your study of Torah* and your fear of Hashem!

You are considering continuing your studies at the yeshivah* here, and you cite, as proof, other young men who are students at Yeshivas Tomchei Temimim* of France (see note 3).

You surely know what was written to them — namely, that they must study with constancy and great ardor during the winter and summer months, to the point that the administration of Yeshivas Tomchei Temimim* can testify that this was indeed the case. Only then, at the end of the summer, may a trip here be considered. These same conditions apply to you as well, since you are one of the first to have come to study at the holy Yeshivas Tomchei Temimim* (see note 4).

May Hashem grant that you study, with fear of Hashem, the revealed dimension of the Torah* and Chassidus*, that you fulfill the mitzvos* in the best possible manner, and that you give me good news of all this.

במענה למכתבו מכ"ב אד"ש.

נבהלתי לקרות בו אשר יש סברא לנסוע באני' שמלחי' והעובדים בה ורב החובל הם ישראלים ובנסיעתה נמצאת בים גם ביום השבת, שזהו חילול שבת בפרהסיא, וחלק בזה גם להנוסעים בה, והיאומן כי יסופר אשר אברך הלומד בישיבת תומכי תמימים ובכלל בן ישיבה תהי' אצלו קס"ד כזו, ולא עוד אלא שמבקש הסכמתי על זה, וכפי שמסיים בשביל לקבל תועלת בתורה ויראת שמים.

ובמ"ש אודות נסיעה ללמוד בישיבה כאן ומביא ראי' מעוד אברכים תלמידי תו"ת דצרפת.

בטח ידוע לו מה נכתב להם, היינו שילמדו בהתמדה ושקידה גדולה במשך החדשים דהחורף והקיץ עד שהנהלת תו"ת תעיד עליהם אז יש לחשוב ע"ד הנסיעה לכאן בשילהי קייטא, ובתנאים אלו שייך הדבר גם אליו, כיון שם הוא מהראשונים שבאו למוד בישיבה הק' דתו"ת. ויהי רצון שילמוד תורה ביראת שמים תורת הנגלה ותורת החסידות ויהדר בקיום המצות ויבשר טוב בכל הענינים הנ"ל.
