Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 24 Adar Sheini, in which you tell me that you had to change a mezuzah*. I am surprised that you say nothing about the verification of the tefillin* (see note 1).

You ask me what your mother should give (see note 2) before lighting the candles, on Erev* Shabbos* and the festivals.

Naturally, it all depends on her means. The idea is as follows: this moment (see note 3) is propitious for Jewish women and girls to formulate their requests to Hashem*. Following this, they fulfill the mitzvah* of lighting the candles on Erev Shabbos and the festivals. The purpose, then, is for them to multiply the blessings of Hashem by giving tzedakah*.

You ask me how to rectify the matter concerning the mezuzah (see note 4). You should learn several chapters of Mishnah* by heart, and at least one chapter of Tanya*. While walking in the street, for example, you will recite them, verbally or at least in thought.

במענה על מכתבו מכ"ד אדר שני, בו כותב אודות המזוזה שצריך הי' להחליפה, ולפלא שאינו כותב על דבר בדיקת התפילין.

ובשאלתו כמה תפריש אמו ת' לפני הדלקת הנרות בערב שבת וערב יום טוב.

מובן שזה תלוי ביכולתה, והנקודה בזה, כיון שעת רצון היא לקבלת בקשות נשי בנות ישראל קודם קיום המצוה דהדלקת הנרות בעש"ק וערב יום טוב, צריך להרבות בברכות השי"ת בזה על ידי נתינת הצדקה.

ובמה שכותב בתיקון ענין המזוזה, ילמוד בעל פה איזה פרקים משניות ולכל הפחות פרק אחד תניא, ובלכתו בדרך וכיו"ב יעבור עליהם אם בדבור או עכ"פ במחשבה.
