To the attention of Mr. Eleazar Steinman (see note 1),

Greetings and blessings,

On the occasion of the Festival of Matzos*, which approaches for us and for all of Yisrael*, for the good, I send to you and to those who follow you my wishes for a kosher and joyous festival. May Hashem* grant that the "time of our freedom" reveal a true freedom — a freedom, physical and spiritual, from veils, obstacles, and all that prevents one from serving Hashem joyfully. Then, you will preserve this joy throughout the entire year.

In connection with this, I am sending you a Pesach* Haggadah*, with a collection of customs and commentaries (see note 2), the third edition of which has just been published. It will surely be of interest to you, and I hope it will reach you in time.

Indeed, every time I see your books or think of them, I say to myself that you possess a considerable merit — that of spreading the wellsprings (see note 3) outward, to circles where no one knows when they would have arrived without your intervention. I am certain that you yourself or your parents possess a particular merit, by virtue of which the good of the many is obtained through your intermediary.

You might ask why I wish to know what confers this merit upon you. In truth, knowledge of the manner in which a person serves Hashem can also be useful to others, and perhaps even to me as well. Furthermore, when one observes that a certain accomplishment has yielded such a reward, one receives increased strength to do the same. Human nature is such that general knowledge does not motivate as much as specific knowledge.

Naturally, it is not my intention to inquire into the personal affairs of others. But in this case, the merit of this dissemination is indeed felt by the greatest number. There was therefore presumably a public merit here, "measure for measure" (see note 4).

שלום וברכה !

לקראת חג המצות הבא עלינו ועל כל ישראל לטובה. הנני שולח לו ולכל הנלוים אליו ברכתי לחג כשר ושמח, ויהיה רצון אשר זמן חירותנו יביא חירות אמתית, חירות בגשם וברוח מהעלמות והסתירים ומכל דבר המבלבל עבודת ה' בשמחה, ולהמשיך משמחה זו על כל השנה כולה.

ובקשר עם זה הנני שולח לכ' הגדה של פסח עם לקוטי מנהגים וטעמים אשר זה עתה הוצאנו לאור במהדורה שלישית, אשר בטח ימצא בה ענין, ותקותי שתגיע לידו בעתו ובזמנו.

ומדי דברי בו ובכל עת אשר אני רואה את ספריו או נזכר בהם, חושב אני על דבר זכותו הכי גדול אשר זכה להפיץ המעיינות חוצה בחוגים אשר לולא הוא מי יודע מתי היו מגיעים שם. ברי לי אשר יש לכ' או להוריו איזה זכות מיוחדת אשר גלגלו זכות הרבים הנ"ל על ידו. ואם ישאל השואל למאי נפקא מינה לי לדעת במה זכה טפי, הנה ראשית ידוע אשר הידיעה בעבודת האדם יש בה להביא תועלת לאחרים ואפשר גם לי, ועוד זאת כשרואים שענין מסויים הביא לידי שכר שכזה, הרי זה נותן תוספת כח לעבודה מסוג זה. ובטבע בני אדם, כשיודעים ענין בכללותו אינו פועל כל כך מכשיודעים פרטי הדברים. מובן, שאין מעניני לדרוש בענינים פרטיים של אחרים, אבל כיון שזכות ההפצה כאן הוא ענין של רבים, הרי בטח הי' כאן גם זכות של רבים מדה כנגד מדה.
