Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of the eve of Rosh Chodesh* Nissan. You refer to your son, a young man to whom several matches have been proposed, but you write to me that he is not interested in marriage, explaining that he wishes to devote some more time to the study of the Torah*, without having to worry about providing for his needs (see note 1).

Of course, no one can be compelled to accept a particular match. Nevertheless, one may think that your son's reaction is explained by the fact that he considers the proposals made to him unsuitable. And if he is presented with a proposal that captures his attention, he will consider the entire question in a different light.

In any event, according to the laws of Torah study of the Alter Rebbe* and, in particular, the customs in practice in Jerusalem (see note 2) and in your family, it would be good to take an interest, with all the necessary ardor, in finding proposals suitable for your son and to present them to him. May Hashem* grant that all of this be fruitful, that he study the Torah in purity — the revealed part of the Torah and Chassidus* — including after his marriage, and that he achieve success.

With my blessing to derive Chassidic satisfaction from all your children, as well as for a kosher and joyous festival of Pesach*,

במענה על מכתבו מער"ח ניסן, בו כותב אודות בנו האברך.. שי' שמציעים לו נכבדות אבל כפי כתבו אינו רוצה להתענין בנוגע שידוך בטענה שרוצה להקדיש עוד איזה זמן ללימוד התורה מבלי שיהיה ריחים על צווארו וכו'.

והנה מובן שאין מקום להכריח את מי שהוא לקבל הצעה מסוימה בהנוגע לשידוכין, ומאידך גיסא יש מקום לומר שטענת בנו האמורה היא מפני שההצעה שמציעים לו לפ"ד בנו אינן מתאימות, ובאם יציעו לו דבר המתאים תשתנה גם השקפת בנו על כללות הדבר,

בכ"א ע"פ המבואר בהלכות ת"ת לרבנו הזקן ובפרט ע"פ מנהג ירושלים ומשפחתם מהנכון אשר יתענינו במרץ הדרוש למצוא הצעות מתאימות בשביל בנו שי' ויציעום לו, ויה"ר שיהיה בהצלחה, וילמוד ורה בטהרה תורת הנגלה ותורת החסידות גם לאחת חתונתו ויצליח.
