To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*,
of manifold accomplishments, Rav Aharon (see note 1),

Greetings and blessings,

I have duly received your letter, in which you consider the possibility of settling as a shochet* of poultry. It seems that this would be in the holy city of Jerusalem or in its vicinity — in any event, in a place where you would not be alone. I therefore approve this project. May Hashem grant you success materially and spiritually. You will use your abilities to strengthen Judaism and to spread it around you.

Some make the error of thinking that Judaism was confronted with trials only in the country where we were previously (see note 2), and that after leaving it, motivation and self-sacrifice become unnecessary. Yet, due to our many sins, one can observe that the trial constituted by the absence of persecution, by the freedom to do as one wishes, is no less difficult.

You were a witness to those persecutions (see note 2) and you observed in what manner one gives of oneself to study the Torah* and to practice the mitzvos*, despite the terrible decrees. No doubt your words will be better heard when you encourage your current surroundings to study the Torah with fear of Hashem, to concretely put the mitzvos into practice, in the most literal sense and in the proper manner. And whoever preserves a Jewish soul is considered as if he had saved the entire world.

מאשר הנני קבלת מכתבו בו כותב אודות האפשרית להסתדר בשחיטת עופות, וכנראה כוונתו שזהו בירושלים עיה"ק ת"ו וסביבותי' ובכל אופן במקום שלא יהיה בודד, ולכן נראית לי סברת הסתדרות זו, ויהי רצון שיהי' בהצלחה בגשמיות וברוחניות וינצל כשרונותיו להחזקת היהדות והפצתה בסביבתו עתה, ודלא כהטועים לומר אשר נסיונות ביהודות הוא רק במדינתנו לפנים ומעבר לגבול המדינה ההיא אין נצרכים להתעוררות ומס"נ וכו' כי בעוה"ר רואים אשר הנסיון דהעדר הרדיפות והחירות לעשות איש כל הישר בעיניו גם זה נסיון קשה הוא, וכיון שהוא הגבר ראה עני איך שעומדים במס"נ על לימוד התורה קיום המצות מתוך גזירות איומות, בטח יהיו דבריו נשמעים יותר כשיעורר בסביבתו עתה ע"ד לימוד תורה ביראת שמים קיום המצות מעשיות כפשוטו כדבעי כוו' וכל המקים אפילו נפש אחת מישראל כאילו קיים עולם מלא.
