To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*,
devotes himself to communal affairs and
renders judgment, Rav Yosef (see note 1),

Greetings and blessings,

I received your letter in its time. Due to my workload and my occupations, my response was delayed, and you will kindly excuse me.

You tell me that you encounter difficulties in your action to strengthen Judaism in your community, due to opponents, veils, and obstacles. Various books explain that one must not be affected by this at all. Quite the contrary — one must redouble one's ardor in the battle for the Torah* and the mitzvos*. And according to a saying of our holy masters, it is a certainty that effort is never in vain.

Indeed, we are living in the period of Ikvesa DiMeshicha* (see note 2), and our Sages tell us in this regard that "there is no day..." (see note 3). It is clear that they did not inform us of this in order to frighten us, but to forewarn us sufficiently early, so that no Jew would be discouraged by observing the situation — and also to give a blessing counterbalancing the curse, so that one would not content oneself with what has been achieved until this day.

For "Hashem made one opposite the other" (see note 4), and when the curse intensifies, which Hashem forbid, it is necessary that there be a strengthening and an accumulation of blessing and good — that is, of everything concerning our Torah and its mitzvos. The light is more intense when it emanates from darkness, and nothing can withstand determination.

מכתבו נתקבל בעתו ומגודל המעמסה והטרדות נתעכב המענה ואת כת"ר הסליחה.

מה שכותב שנתקל בקשיים בעבודתו בהחזקת היהדות בקהלתו מצד מנגדים והעלמות והסתרים, הנה ידוע על פי המבואר בכמה ספרים שאין להתרשם מזה כלל וכלל ואדרבה להוסיף אומץ במלחמתה של תורה ומצוות. וידוע פתגם רבותינו נשיאינו נבג"מ זי"ע - חזקה לתעמולה שאינה חוזרת ריקם.

והרי נמצאים אנו בעקבתא דמשיחא אשר על ימים אלו הודיעונו חכמינו ז"ל אין לך יום שאין כו', אשר בודאי לא היתה כוונת הודעה זו להטיל אימה, אלא להודיע בעוד מועד בכדי שלא יפול לב איש הישראלי עליו בראותו המצב, ועוד זאת בכדי להוסיף ברכה כנגד קללה ולא להסתפק באותם ההשגים של היום, כי הרי זה לעומת זה עשה האלקים, וכשהקללה מתרבה ר"ל, מוכרח הרבוי וההגדלה של הברכה והטוב, הם עניני תורתנו ומצוותי', ויתרון האור מן החושך, ואין לך דבר העומד בפני הרצון.
