Greetings and blessings,

I have duly received your letter of 23 Nissan*. You allude to someone and you employ, regarding him, the term "engagement." I was shocked by this, and you will understand the effect it had on me. Nevertheless, I know that this man possesses the merit of tzedakah*, in particular that which is devoted to proper education, to which he has had the merit of contributing significant sums in recent years. I therefore have the conviction that this "engagement" will not last very long.

May Hashem* grant that the break occur with kindness and mercy, and that ultimately he come to realize — also with kindness and mercy — that he is one of the Jewish people, that he cannot find himself in any other place, and that ultimately he will encounter only troubles in other places, even if at first they flatter him and pat him on the shoulder. It is surely unnecessary to point out to you that in this matter, you must do everything in your power to ensure that this be so.
