To Mrs. Esther (see note 1),

Blessings and greetings,

I am responding to your letter, in which you briefly describe your life. You tell me that you are currently a secretary in an institution (see note 2).

You do not specify what this secretarial work entails, but in any event, it surely enables you to spread and instill the spirit of traditional Judaism in its students. Moreover, the director of this school wishes it to be so and does everything in his power to make it the case. The same is true for everything concerning our world, which has many aspects — but one can group them, the groups into species, the species into genera. Ultimately, whoever believes in the Unity, in the one Elokim*, reunites all these manifestations into a single point — the Unity of Hashem* extending to the least aspect of creation.

The same applies to the life of a person and to what he accomplishes in the course of his existence. These are many actions that divide into groups, and these groups into species, down to the ultimate point — the inner dimension of all of a person's accomplishments in his life, in the formulation of our Sages: "I was created to serve my Creator" — to put His Will into practice in each action, as it is said: "In all your ways, acknowledge Him."

A particular responsibility falls upon those who are able to influence the young generation. Indeed, this influence can orient the student in the direction that truly suits his good, or in the opposite direction, which Hashem forbid. The Creator is good and upright. He therefore grants, from the outset, all the forces and all the possibilities enabling one to assume this determinative role. And everything depends only on the will of the person.

Naturally, these few lines are not intended to deliver a discourse to you. They relate to the end of your letter, referring to the education and conduct through which Hashem will enable you to know happiness. I therefore wanted to remind and emphasize to you how fortunate your lot is, since it enables you to strengthen Judaism and to spread it. This is the path, the channel, and the receptacle through which you receive the blessings of Hashem in everything that concerns you — including on a personal level, as well as for your husband and for your entire family.

You surely know and observe the ancient custom of Jewish women of giving tzedakah* before lighting the candles on the eve of Shabbos* and the festivals.

With my blessing to convey good tidings of all of this,

P.S.: Your husband also engages in pedagogical activity, and it is therefore clear that these words are addressed to him in the same manner. May Hashem grant me the success that they have their effect.

ברכה ושלום!

במענה על מכתבה, בו כותבת ראשי פרקים מימי חיי' ואשר עתה עובדת כמזכירה במוסד...

ואף שאינה מפרטת תפקיד המזכירות במוסד זה, בלי ספק שגם תפקיד זה נותן האפשרית להפיץ ולהחדיר ביותר וביותר רוח יהדות מסורתית בחניכי המוסד, ובפרט שמנהל המוסד מעונין בזה ועושה את התלוי בו בכיוון זה, והוא ע"ד כל עניני עולמנו, אשר אף כי רבים הם, בכל זה מצטרפים לכתות והכתות למינים והמינים לסוגים עד שסוף סוף כל המאמין באחדות ובא-ל אחד, מאחד כל תופעות העולם לענין ונקודה אחת, היא אחדות הבורא בכל פרט מפרטי הבריאה.

שעל דרך זה הוא גם בחיי האדם ופעולתו בחיים, אשר אף כי רבות הן מצטרפות למינים והמינים לסוגים עד לנקודה האחרונה והפנימית של כל הפעולות ושל כל משך חיי האדם בנוסח חכמנו ז"ל הידוע: אני נבראתי לשמש את קוני, ז.א. מילוי רצון הבורא בכל ענין ופרט וכהוראת הכתוב, בכל דרכיך דעהו, ואחריות נוספת לכל אלו היכולים להשפיע בחינוך הדור הצעיר כיון שהשפעה זו יכולה לכוון את החניך והמושפע בכיון הרצוי האמיתי לטובתו או ח"ו להיפך, ע"פ הנהגתו של הבורא ב"ה אשר טוב וישר הוא, נותנים מראש הכחות והאפשריות למלא גם תפקיד הכי אחראי זה, ואין הדבר תלוי אלא ברצון האדם.

פשוט אשר לא לדרשה באתי בשורותי האמורות, כי אם בקשר לזה שמסיימת במכתבה אודות הדרכה והתנהגות ואשר יוסיף לה השי"ת אושר וכו'.

להעירה ולעוררה, אשרי חלקה שנסתדרה באופן שיכולה לפעול בהחזקת היהדות והפצתה, וזהו הדרך והצנור והכלי לקבלת ברכות השי"ת בהמצטרך גם בענינים הפרטים שלה, של בעלה ושל כל המשפחה שלה שיחיו.

בטח יודעת ושומרת מנהג בנות ישראל מאז ומקדם, להפריש לצדקה קודם הדלקת הנרות בכל ערב שבת וערב יום טוב.
