I greet you and bless you.

I am responding to your letter, which I have just received. I hasten to reply because you tell me that you intend to leave imminently the country in which you currently reside.

It does not seem to me at all that this is a good initiative. Indeed, Hashem has granted you particular gifts in the field of education. And you find yourself in a country where the lack of resources in this area is dreadful. One can concretely observe the terrible consequences of this lack in the state of Judaism in that country. As you know, our Sages say that "the poor of your city have priority." In my view, the responsibility and merit therefore fall upon you to seek educational activity in the country where you currently reside, deploying all necessary efforts.

You do not explain the current change and you do not justify your plan, which goes, however, in the opposite direction of what you were thinking of doing some time ago. I do not know the details of the situation in your city, but in fact this changes nothing in the matter, for the two previously stated facts are fully verified — your pedagogical aptitudes and those of your wife, on one hand, and the dreadful lack of good traditional educators, on the other.

Perhaps your new reasoning is also explained by salary conditions, but this seems unlikely to me. In any case, Hashem acts "measure for measure," and I am therefore convinced that those who draw Jews closer in that country, by giving them a good education, will be blessed in all their needs, spiritual and material.

במענה על מכתבו שנתקבל זה עתה, וממהר הנני לענות עליו כיון שכותב שבדעתו לעזוב בקרוב מדינתו עתה.

ולא נראית לי סברא זו כלל, כיון שחוננו השי"ת בכשרונות מיוחדים בשדה החינוך הכשר, נמצא הוא במדינה שהמחסור בכחות בשטח זה מבהיל הוא, וכנראה גם במוחש התוצאות האיומות ממחסור זה במצב היהדות במדינה האמורה, שלכן ע"פ ציווי רז"ל הידוע עניי עירך קודמין, לדעתי עליו האחריות והזכות לחפש ביגיעה הדרושה האפשריות במדינה בה נמצא עתה לעבוד בעניני חינוך.

כיון שאינו כותב הטעם לשינוי העכשוי והתכנית שלו, שהוא היפך ממה שהי' בדעתו לפני איזה זמן, אינני עומד על פרטי המצב ב... אבל באמת אין זה נוגע כלל בהנוגע לפועל, כיון ששתי הנקודות האמורות אמיתיות הן בהחלט, כשרונותיו וכן כשרון זוגתו תחי' בשדה החינוך הכשר והמצב האיום המשוע למחנכים מסורתים וטובים אשר במדינה.

אפשר שגם תנאי אופני המשכורת גרמו להסברא החדשה שלו, אף שחשש רחוק הוא בעיני, בכל זה לדעתי בטוח השי"ת אשר במדתו שהיא מדה כנגד מדה, הנה כל אלו שיעסקו בקירוב בנ"י במדינה האמורה ע"י חינוכם בכשרות, לברכם בהמצטרך להם מנפש ועד בשר.
