Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of the day during which the word "good" was said twice (note: Tuesday of Creation). You inform me of what unfortunately happened during Shabbos* (note: a fire broke out) and of what you did in a panic (note: a gesture to extinguish the fire). You tell me that you are suffering from this morally.

First of all, you must consult a Rav. Indeed, perhaps it was a mitzvah* to act as you did. Everything depends on the details of what happened. In any event, the Rambam* says, at the end of his Laws of the Lulav, and various passages of the Tanya* confirm it, that it is particularly necessary to serve Hashem with joy and enthusiasm. Now, the service of Hashem corresponds to the verse: "In all your ways, know Him" (Mishlei 3:6) (note: every act of a person is thus part of it), as the halachah* rules in the Tur Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim, chapter 231. You must therefore put this directive into practice.

May Hashem grant that there be fulfilled in you the saying of the righteous, that after a fire, one becomes wealthy. Indeed, the Attribute of Mercy is then awakened. Now, it is superior to that of Kindness, which was revealed previously. It is the Attribute of Yaakov — "an inheritance without limit, extending from one extreme to the other." And you should consult the Derech Mitzvosecha* of the Tzemach Tzedek*, at page 114b.

במענה על מכתבו מיום שהוכפל בו כי טוב, בו כותב ע"ד המאורע ל"ע ול"ע בש"ק ופעולתו אז מתוך הבהלה, וכותב אשר לבו עליו דוי על זה.

והנה לכל לראש עליו לשאול הוראת רב, שהרי אפשר - אדרבה מצוה הי' לעשות מה שעשה, שזה תלוי בפרטי המאורע, ובכ"א ע"פ מ"ש ברמב"ם סוף הלכות לולב ועפמ"ש בכ"מ בספר תניא קדישא על ההכרח הכי גדול בעבודת השם בשמחה ובטוב לבב דוקא ועבודת השם היא כמש"כ בכל דרכיך דעהו וכפסק הלכה בטושו"ע או"ח סי' רל"א, עליו לקבל גם ציווי זה. ויה"ר שיקוים בו פתגם קדושי עליון שאחר השריפה מתעשרים, שמתעוררת מדת הרחמים שהיא גדולה ממדת החסד שבתחלה שהיא מדתו של יעקב נחלה בלי מצרים מבריח מן הקצה אל הקצה (עיין דרך מצותיך לאדמו"ר הצ"צ קי"ד ע"ב).
