To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav Yaakov (note: Rav Y. Horowitz, of Ramat Gan),

Greetings and blessings,

After a long interruption, I received with pleasure your letter of 12 Sivan, announcing good news — the improvement in the state of health of that woman. May Hashem grant that this improvement continue until she fully regains her strength.

Passing from one good to another, you also announce your efforts, crowned with success, to develop the charity fund (gemach*) of your synagogue.

It is worth noting the connection between the two elements. Indeed, the synagogue enables a person to present his needs to Hashem in the most literal sense, which includes children, health, and material prosperity. Now, to obtain the satisfaction of his request down here — that is, to literally receive children, health, and material prosperity — one must give tzedakah*, as explained in various passages of Iggeres HaKodesh* by the Alter Rebbe*. Moreover, acts of lovingkindness (gemilus chasadim*) are the highest form of tzedakah (note: since they also include lending to those who are not poor, thus extending to all). This is self-evident.

May Hashem grant that for many more years, you do good through this charity fund, through acts of kindness in general — including in the spiritual sense — through the dissemination of Judaism and especially of the wellsprings (note: of Chassidus*), in every place where you exercise your influence. This practice will also increase your success in the acts of kindness you bestow upon that which is "forsaken" (note: the body, so that one may receive good health). In this way, you will do good deeds both material and spiritual. And on this subject, consult the Tanya*, at the beginning of chapter 29.

לאחרי הפסק הארוך נעם לי לקבל מכתבו מי"ב סיון בבשורה הטובה מהטבת מצב בריאות... ויהי רצון שילך מצבה הלוך וטוב עד אשר תחזור לאיתנה.

ומטובה לטובה בשורתו ע"ד השתדלותו והצלחתו בהרחבת קרן הגמ"ח בבית הכנסת שלהם.

- ויש להעיר על דבר התאמת שני הענינים, כי הרי תפקיד בית הכנסת בית תפלה הוא בקשת צרכי האדם מלפני המקום בקשת צרכיו גם כפשוטו שכלולים בבני חיי ומזוני רוויחי, והכלי להמשכת מילוי בקשה זו למטה מטה, ז.א. כפשטות הענינים דבני חיי ומזוני רוויחי הוא - מצות הצדקה, וכמבואר באגה"ק לרבנו הזקן בכמה מקומות ומהמעלה היותר עליונה בצדקה ה"ה הענין דגמ"ח, וק"ל.

ויהי רצון שעוד רבות בשנים יגמול חסד ע"י קרן הגמ"ח האמור וגמילות חסד גם ברוחניות על ידי הפצת היהדות בכלל והפצת המעינות ביחוד בכל מקום שידו מגעת, וזה יוסיף ג"כ בהצלחתו בגמ"ח עם עלובה זו (עיין תניא ריש פרק כ"ט) גמ"ח הן בגשמיות והן ברוחניות.
