Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter of 29 Iyar, which I have just received. You tell me of a young man, a Yeshiva* dean (rosh yeshiva*), who currently finds himself at a crossroads. Indeed, the following two possibilities present themselves to him:
A) He can continue his sacred mission as dean of a Yeshiva, but this takes up most of his time and he can no longer deepen his personal study, while some promise him a brilliant future in the comprehension and study of the Torah.
B) He can also relinquish his position as Yeshiva dean, join a Kollel*, and devote himself to study for its own sake. But in that case, the level of the Yeshiva will decline. The distinguished place it occupies in the Holy Land will be lost, for he is its pillar.
It is clear that he must continue his sacred mission within the Yeshiva of which he is the dean, and even redouble his ardor in this matter. The merit of the public — that is, of all the students receiving his instruction — will come to his aid, enabling him to obtain the satisfaction of his personal needs and to experience elevation in Torah study. Indeed, you know the saying of the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya and the Shulchan Aruch, at the beginning of his book Torah Or*, that by giving tzedakah*, "one gains a mind and heart a thousand times more refined." Now, what he does is indeed a form of spiritual tzedakah. This is self-evident.
I take this opportunity to remind you of the necessity of observing the three daily studies that apply to everyone, instituted by my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us. They are:
A) Tehillim*, according to their monthly division, each day after the morning prayer.
B) Chumash* with the commentary of Rashi on the weekly Torah portion: on Sunday from its beginning until Sheini, on Monday from Sheini to Shelishi, and so on.
C) Tanya*, which is studied daily according to its annual division. These studies have a propitious quality in various domains.
With my blessing,
On behalf of the Rebbe Shlita,
The secretary,
