To the Rav*, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav* Menachem Zeev HaLevi (note: Rav M.Z. Gringlass of Montreal; see also letter no. 5415),

I greet you and bless you,

I have duly received your letters, according to the dates noted below, along with their contents.

I am surprised that you tell me nothing at all about the compendium of Chabad* customs (note: see, on this subject, letters nos. 4870 and 5636). Are you devoting yourself to it or not? There is a specific benefit in this, in accordance with the teaching of the Mishnah*: "The practice is essential, not the theory." And this compendium of customs concerns precisely concrete action. Moreover, its compilation will surely prompt the recollection of additional points. If, for some reason, it is impossible for you to occupy yourself with it, please inform me as soon as possible. In a case of force majeure, it is clear that one is exempt from acting.

At a propitious moment, I will mention all those you cite at the holy resting place* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit* protects us. When you have good news in this matter, please let me know as soon as possible. I thank you in advance.

ולפלא שאינו מזכיר כלל אודות ענין ליקוט מנהגי חב"ד האם מתעסק בזה או לא, והרי נקודה מיוחדת בזה מתאים למאמר המשנה לא המדרש עיקר אלא המעשה שכוונת הלקוטי מנהגים הוא דוקא בענינים של מעשה, ועוד זאת אשר הו"ל של ליקוט כזה בטח מעורר זכרונות אודות עוד ענינים. ובאם מאיזה סיבה שתהי' אי אפשר לו להתעסק בהאמור, בטח ג"כ יודיע בהקדם, ואונס רחמנא פטרי'.

בעת רצון אזכיר את כל אלה שכותב אודותם על הציון הק' של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע, ובטח כשתהי' בזה בשו"ט ימהר להודיע ות"ח מראש.
