Igrot Kodesh · Letter 5537 — Tzedakah
Volume 15 · Letter 213 · To: distingué ‘Hassid qui craint D.ieu
By the grace of Hashem*,
24 Sivan* 5717,
Brooklyn,
To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*, Rav* Yosef (note: Rav Y. Tawil of Brooklyn),
I greet you and bless you,
I respond to your remark, transmitted through the intermediary of your nephew, the young and distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*, Aharon (note: Rav A. Tawil of Buenos Aires). The Daas Zekeinim* on the Torah, on Parshas* Behaalosecha* 11:27, and the Tosafos HaRosh* state: "Eldad* and Meidad* were the brothers of Moshe*. Indeed, when the Torah was given, immoral relations were forbidden and all therefore separated" (note: from their wife, when it involved a prohibited union — such was the case for Amram*, who had married his aunt). "Amram* himself, the father of Moshe*, separated from Yocheved*, his aunt who was also his wife. He then married another woman and fathered Eldad* and Meidad*." You ask me how this is possible. Indeed, Parshas* Behaalosecha* relates that the elders were designated close to the giving of the Torah. Yet Eldad* and Meidad* were already prophesying in the camp.
In truth, the Rosh* means that Amram* separated from Yocheved* for the reason he cites, but not that he did so at that date. For Amram* was a prophet, and when he became aware of this prohibition, he separated from Yocheved*. All of this is explained in greater detail in the Toldos Yitzchak* of Rabbi Yitzchak Caro*, on Parshas* Behaalosecha*, cited in the addenda of the Torah Shelemah* on Parshas* Shemos*, which states: "Amram* learned from Moshe* of the prohibition of immoral relations that was later to be promulgated by the Torah. Consequently, he separated from Yocheved*, his aunt, and took another wife."
I hope that you also study Chassidus*, the profound teaching of the Torah which, in the expression of the holy Zohar*, is its soul — that is, the soul of its revealed dimension, itself described as the body, as the Zohar* states, Volume 3, page 156a.
With my respects and my blessing,
On behalf of the Rebbe Shlita*,
the secretary,
