Igrot Kodesh · Letter 5543 — Tzedakah

Volume 15 · Letter 219

By the grace of Hashem*,

26 Sivan* 5717,

Brooklyn,

To the Rav*, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav* Avraham Chanoch (note: Rav A.H. Glitsenstein of Lod; see also letter no. 5392),

I greet you and bless you,

I respond to your letter of 21 Sivan*. You tell me that a detailed program has begun to be established for the days of liberation of 12 and 13 Tammuz*, which are approaching. I am pleased by this. No doubt you will include all those who will be active afterward in the planning. In this way, one can be more confident that they will carry out the mission entrusted to them properly. It is not the same for those who are convinced of their own worth. When they are given ready-made instructions, they immediately tell themselves that they must do the opposite, that they will act differently.

You refer to the expenses (note: occasioned by the activities undertaken). Without making a vow, I will ask the Chassidim* to participate, covering half, through a special collection. You say that according to your program, the gathering is to last at most two hours. I am surprised by this. Why this restriction? The sending of the correction chart for the Bitaon* (note: Bitaon Chabad, organ of the youth of the Chabad* association) has been delayed due to my many occupations. It will be drafted and sent at the next opportunity. It would then be good to publish it immediately and not wait, so as to issue a double number.

With my blessing to convey good news of all this, with joy and enthusiasm, as well as good news of what concerns you personally,

M. Schneerson,

N.B.: You refer to the parables of Chabad* Chassidus*. These are very few in number, including in the form adopted by preachers — that is, by describing a story. Rather, one finds in them images like those of the Midrash*: "This resembles a king of flesh and blood..." In place of this, Chabad* Chassidus* rather employs the verse: "By my flesh, I perceive the Divine" (note: Iyov 19:26). It draws upon this verse by illustrating spirituality through the soul and its functioning. The superiority of this approach is as follows: the image is a consequence of what it is meant to illustrate — that is, of what transpires Above. You will consult the Tanya*, at the beginning of chapter 3. As for the few parables that can be found there, their source is often indicated. This is the case, for example, with the parable of the sounding of the Shofar*.
